Starent Networks has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Taiwan for the promotion and development of the WiMAX
industry in Taiwan.
In addition to signing an agreement with Starent Networks, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) also signed MoUs for cooperation in the promotion and production of WiMAX
products with Sprint Nextel, Nokia (

Alert) Siemens Networks, Alcatel-Lucent, and Motorola.
Taiwan’s the Ministry of Economic Affairs is responsible for guiding and managing Taiwanese economic development and facilitates technology creation and adoption. The Ministry makes efforts to attract telecommunication and information technology companies to partner with Taiwanese businesses for the promotion of innovative technologies.

Taiwan aims to deploy broadband wireless infrastructure and life-style applications based on WiMAX technology through its M-Taiwan Initiative. $300 million have reportedly been allocated by the government under the M-Taiwan project for WiMAX-related investment, which runs though 2008.
Steve Ruey-Long Chen, minister of MOEA said that Taiwan is looking to take a market leadership role in WiMAX technology development and deployment. They find working with Starent Networks a logical choice, as they are seen as one of the world’s leading Mobile WiMAX technology providers.
According to Starent Networks, the MoU between MOEA and Starent Networks outlines several key goals, including: MOEA facilitation of strategic alliances between Starent Networks and Taiwanese WiMAX vendors; cooperation in developing a global WiMAX ecosystem; joint promotion of WiMAX technology through the M-Taiwan initiative; and facilitation of joint testing among vendors.
“We are very pleased to be working with the MOEA on WiMAX development and promotion, as Taiwan has long been a technology innovator and early adopter,” said Ashraf Dahod, president and CEO of Starent Networks in a
statement.
“Having the Taiwanese government and major vendors work together to build the WiMAX market will help to propel global availability of wireless broadband,” added Dahod.
