On-Ramp and Koncar INEM Collaborate to Deliver First Condition Monitoring Solution for Oil and Gas Industry

By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor

On-Ramp Wireless, the renowned developer of Ultra-Link Processing system for smart grid monitoring, and Koncar INEM, manufacturer of electronics equipment and electric energy facilities, partnered to deliver a system for wide-area wireless condition monitoring applications.

In a press release, the two companies announced that the condition monitoring solution leverages On-Ramp's Ultra-Link Processing (ULP) technology. The electronics in the solution are provided by Koncar INEM, a part of the Koncar group of companies.

Targeted at all major oil and gas pipeline operations worldwide, the solution will be deployed in an initial pilot this fall, the partnering companies mentioned in the release.

This condition monitoring solution integrates a pressure sensor, On-Ramp's ULP system, and a Modbus gateway and complies with industry standards.

Long range and extensive extended battery life is another plus point of the solution. It is also ATEX-certified, which means it is well suited for operation in explosive environments.

Under the current industry scenario, most wireless technologies available have limited reach and require extensive use of powered routers and gateways. But the condition monitoring solution based on ULP technology covers large industrial campuses with minimal network infrastructure.

As an example, the pilot project will monitor pressure sensors as far away as 10 km from the On-Ramp ULP Access Point (News - Alert). No wonder, the two partnering companies claimed in the press release that its solution will provide a breakthrough in wireless condition monitoring.

“As a leading technology provider, we are excited to be one of the first companies to deploy On-Ramp's ULP technology for condition monitoring. We have the experience and the backing of a large engineering organization to support large volume deployments, and look forward to working on mass deployments with On-Ramp. Oil and gas, as well as other process industries, are eager to deploy new technology to overcome the hurdles of more remote operations and improve safety,” said CEO of Koncar INEM, eljko Tukša, in a statement.

Data collected from pressure sensors in the pipeline manifolds and distribution lines will be collected in a Modbus gateway, and made available to major oil and gas companies for simple integration with industry standard process automation systems.

“This condition monitoring pilot project is a first for our technology - delivering industry leading monitoring performance at a low cost. We have successfully broken the adaptation barrier for the implementation of wireless device monitoring, and condition monitoring is a key next step for our company,” president and CEO of On-Ramp Joaquin Silva noted.

It will be relevant here to mention that few months back, On-Ramp Wireless announced collaboration with NURI Telecom to develop a cost-efficient single technology wireless network metering solution. The solution, the company said in a separate press release, will enable connectivity for hard-to-reach meters, which can represent up to 10 percent of a single Smart Grid meter deployment, to help Smart Grid suppliers ensure 100 percent connectivity. NURI Telecom is a leading global provider of utility IT and end-to-end Smart Grid infrastructure solutions
