Webinar - Recent Webinar Discusses Performance Management's Importance for Ethernet Backhaul

A recent Webinar titled “Why Performance Management is Critical for Success in Delivering Ethernet Backhaul Services” was broadcast by TMC (News - Alert), and is still available for free.

If you’re at all in the business you know that bandwidth demands for MSOs and wireless carriers continue to increase at phenomenal rates -- and no, it’s not all the iPad’s fault, although they do suck up their share of bandwidth. “Monitoring the performance of the IP/Ethernet based backhaul infrastructure has become paramount for delivering the levels of service your customers demand,” Webinar officials say.

Presenting during the Webinar was Ziaur Rahman, chief program architect of Comcast (News - Alert) Cable, with 25+ years of experience with Telecommunication Management Systems. He was a speaker, Management World Americas 2007, TMF Webinar, TeleStrategy Conference 2006 and the chair and speaker, IQPC (News - Alert) NextGen BSS/OSS Conference.

During the presentation Rahman highlights the “tremendous data growth,” especially in mobile. About half a million terabytes are on the mobile networks now, Rahman said, projecting that to increase to 3.5 million by 2014 with all the expected gaming, VoIP, P2P and other usage. Of course this means an increase in the number of possible backhaul failure points and bottlenecks, which demands new levels of scalability and end-to-end visibility as well.

Also presenting was Pete Cruz, senior director of product management and marketing for the company, responsible for leading product management and marketing. Cruz has held senior level product management and marketing positions at Cabletron, Opticom, Smarts, Empirix (News - Alert), Voyence and EMC.

Cruz suggested ways to improve backhaul performance management, discussing such issues as proactively monitoring network performance to ensure the infrastructure meets current service level agreements and addresses future demands, and optimizing Ethernet backhaul infrastructure to support increased multimedia traffic levels.
