Ribbon's SBC 5400 Passes JITC Certification, Approved for Department of Defense Deployment

By Erik Linask March 17, 2020

Security has to be top of mind for every organization, given the evolving threat landscape today.  Bad actors are everywhere and are constantly using the latest tactics and technological advances to poke holes in enterprise infrastructure.

Perhaps nowhere is this more important that with government entities, which deal with highly sensitive and often critical communications and information.  As such, technology vendors supporting government organizations – like the Department of Defense – are closely vetted before being approved for use and must be listed on the Defense Information Systems Agency (News - Alert) (DISA) Approved Products List.

Among the security products that have passed Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) certification  and been listed on the DISA APL are several of Ribbon Communication’s line of SBCs, which provide security, interoperability, advanced session management, and carrier-grade reliability for network operators.

Added to that list of DoD-certified products now is Ribbon’s SBC 5400, designed to support high-scale media and transcoding sessions and multimedia traffic across enterprise networks.  It also provides communications security features – like encryption, DoS and DDoS attack prevention, and dynamic blacklisting – without impacting network or application performance.

“The Ribbon SBC 5400 allows the DoD and its agencies to protect critical communications infrastructure from sophisticated threats and cyber-attacks using the latest in encryption technology,” said Tony Scarfo (News - Alert), EVP, Products, R&D, Support and Supply Chain for Ribbon.  “The Ribbon SBC 5400 enables the DoD to future-proof its communications network while delivering advanced protection against SIP-based attacks.”

The DoD is no stranger to Ribbon technology, having migrated more than 50,000 users to its Application Server back in 2018 – one of the largest VoIP deployments in DoD history.  Its certification from one of the most stringent approval processes in the world shouldn’t be surprising, considering Ribbon was named market leader in the Enterprise SBC space last year.

Independent network and security testing firm Miercom reported the following regarding its experiences with the SBC 5400:

  • Advanced Scalability – The capacity of the SBC 5400 hardware platform can be easily expanded to 75,000 concurrent sessions by simply upgrading media interface capacity via software licensing.
  • Unparalleled Performance – While many competitive SBCs lose as much as half their call capacity by encrypting VoIP media streams, the SBC 5400 easily supports just as many encrypted secure RTP sessions as normal unencrypted media sessions.
  • Robust Security – Denial of Service (DoS) flood attacks were launched at the SBC 5400’s SIP-signaling and media ports while it handled high call volumes. The SBC 5400 effectively deflected these attacks and no legitimate calls were dropped irrespective of call complexity.

The list of Ribbon solutions that have been JITC-certified includes:  Ribbon's extensive list of JITC-certified solutions for voice, video, security and desktop collaboration available on the DISA APL include the SBC Software Edition (SWe), SBC 7000, SBC 5110, SBC 5210, Voice Exchange 900 (VX 900), G5 Media Gateway, SBC 5000 series as part of the Microsoft Skype (News - Alert) for Business solution and the Application Server.

Communications network performance and security, along with the latest communications tools and technologies driving enterprise efficiency and productivity will be part of the featured topics at TechSuperShow 2021, coming to the brand new Miami Beach Convention Center June 22-25, 2021. Featuring ITEXPOMSP ExpoSD-WAN ExpoFuture of Work Expo, and several other collocated events, TechSuperShow will once again combine an unprecedented opportunity for education and networking.  Enterprises and SMBs, service providers and carriers, MSPs, channel partners, providing access to the latest content and products and services that are driving business success.
