WiMAX Modems, Gateways To Form Half of WiMAX Chipset Market

WiMAX (News - Alert) modems and gateways will dominate the WiMAX chipset market, representing nearly 50 percent of the market on a unit basis in 2013, according to new research from In-Stat (News - Alert). Other key equipment segments for WiMAX chipsets include external modules, mobile PCs, base stations, handsets and other portable devices. Overall, the companypredicts that the WiMAX chipset revenue to reach $352 million by 2013.

In-Stat has found the following results: (a) WiMAX chipset vendors Beceem, GCT, Intel, and Sequans lead the market. (b) Both WiMAX and LTE (News - Alert) have advantages and disadvantages, but the company believes that the technologies will coexist in the future. (c) WiMAX stands to benefit from government stimulus and rural broadband initiatives. WiMAX’s relative maturity positions it favorably for ‘shovel ready’ projects.

The research, “WiMAX Chipsets: ‘e’ is the New Black”, covers the worldwide market for WiMAX chipsets. It includes the following sections: (a) Examination of the current state of WiMAX technology and applications along with competing technologies. (b) Analysis of regional opportunities. (c) Forecasts of WiMAX chipset unit shipments, revenue, and average selling prices through 2013. (d) Profiles of key WiMAX chipset vendors: Beceem (News - Alert) Communications, GCT Semiconductor, Intel, and Sequans Communications.

“WiMAX is not a mere niche technology to fill a void until LTE is up and running, but a complementary solution for providing last mile wireless broadband access and a true mobile Internet solution,” said Jim McGregor, an In-Stat analyst. “WiMAX chipset technology has already moved beyond multiple chips to single chips solutions that integrate the baseband processor chip with the RF radio. A small group of semiconductor manufacturers have already emerged as leaders in this growing segment.”

This research is part of the company’s wireless broadband evolution service, which provides end-to-end coverage of the technologies and strategies for the development and deployment of future wireless technologies, such as HSPA, LTE, WiMAX and Enhanced Wireless DSL. The coverage includes the infrastructure, devices, services, and subscribers for wireless broadband.

By 2013, In-Stat forecasts that the number of global broadband subscribers will surpass 1 billion. This research provides a worldwide, comprehensive perspective on the delivery of consumer broadband voice, video, and data services.

In-Stat studies the subject closely.

Recently, the firm reported that consumer enthusiasm for broadband service continues unabated. During calendar year 2009, an average of 8.8 million new broadband subscribers worldwide signed up for service each month. In-Stat forecasts that the number of global broadband subscribers will surpass 1 billion by 2013.
