Frost & Sullivan: Satellite Service Market Finds Success in Broadband and Pay TV

Market participants in Latin America are striving to increase satellite capacity, after seeing that this market drives its revenues from broadband, mobile telephony and TV digitalization. The reason being is because the growth of wireless and fixed networks in less-populated areas is gaining a significant expansion of satellite capacity.

In a new analysis from Frost & Sullivan entitled Latin American Satellite Service Market, finds that the market earned revenues of $975 million in 2007 and estimates this to reach $1.16 billion in 2013.

"Fiber networks are limited to the most developed regions, leaving important space for satellite-based solutions to grow," says Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert) Consultant Andres Sciarrotta. "Moreover, the higher requirement for mobile content is, in turn, driving demand for data applications transmitted by satellite."

Users, no matter where they are located, can use fixed and mobile solutions to gain access to Internet broadband satellite. According to the analysis firm, a fixed version provides broadband access throughout Latin America, at speeds comparable to those available in big cities.

Users can use broadband and access their e-mails, transfer files, communicate through VoIP, or schedule meetings through video conference IP like if they were wired-in. However, despite these advances, the satellite service market is yet to work around competition from terrestrial infrastructure and has also find a solution to cost structure and payment methods, even though having overcome low prices. The report says that the market is also challenged by the underwater cable network in Chile and other land installations.

"Developments of TV digitalization and high definition TV (HDTV) broadcasting are also expected to drive the demand for transponders," says Sciarrotta. "Further, the introduction of Ka-Band can augment the array of applications provided over satellite."

According to the company, Latin American Satellite Service Market is part of the Communication Services Growth Partnership Services program, which also includes research in the following markets, Latin American Mobile Enterprise Service Market, Latin American Broadband market, Brazil total telecommunications market.
