Report: Carrier Ethernet Switch/Router Market Reaches $538M

Heavy Reading, the market research division of TechWeb's Light Reading (News - Alert), recently published a report revealing that worldwide sales of carrier Ethernet switch/routers (CESRs) rose 1 percent quarter-over-quarter and 12 percent year-over-year in the second quarter of 2008 to $538 million.

The report, “Carrier Ethernet Switch/Router Quarterly Market Tracker” further estimates that Cisco's CESR sales softened in 2Q08 and left the vendor with a market share just under 50 percent. Foundry, Extreme and Huawei (News - Alert) are the equipment vendors that rounded out the top six CESR market-share positions in the quarter, according to the report.

Heavy Reading's Carrier Ethernet Switch/Router Quarterly Market Tracker provides a comprehensive list of more than 265 operators and other entities around the world that have purchased CESR platforms.

Analyzing each vendor's market strategy while identifying and analyzing customer wins, it delivers a complete accounting of telecom equipment manufacturer revenues in the sector, including quarter-by-quarter revenue and market share breakouts for each supplier, sales by geographic region and application, and revenue projections.

15 vendors that are generating sales from CESR products or plan to roll out CESR products have been analyzed in the report. The vendors examined include Alcatel-Lucent, ANDA Networks, Ciena, Cisco Systems, ECI Telecom (News - Alert), Ericsson, Extreme Networks, Foundry Networks, Hitachi Cable, Huawei Technologies, Juniper Networks, MRV Communications, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nortel (News - Alert) Networks, and Tejas Networks.

The report further claims that eight of the 12 revenue-generating CESR vendors covered in the study posted sequential growth in 2Q08, while Alcatel-Lucent, Hitachi Cable, and relative newcomer, Juniper all recorded strong growth and gained share during the quarter.

Stan Hubbard, senior analyst for Heavy Reading and author of the CESR Quarterly Market Tracker report, said that intensifying competition and macroeconomic weakness have taken some steam out of the hard-charging CESR market, but the fundamental business drivers remain strong and should still fuel market growth of as much as 15 percent per year through 2012.

Hubbard noted that currently more than 450 telecom operators and other entities around the world are investing in CESR solutions to support next-generation business, consumer, and cellular/WiMAX (News - Alert) backhaul services and applications.
