VeriSign ( News - Alert), Inc., a provider of Internet infrastructure services, released the Domain Report for the second quarter of 2008, revealing the continued growth of the Internet globally.
There were 168 million domain name registrations across the Top Level Domain Names (TLDs), around the middle of 2008. It shows a four percent increase over the first quarter of 2008 and 22 percent growth over the same quarter last year.
The base of Country Code Top Level Domain Names (ccTLDs) is 65 million, which is a four percent increase over the quarter and a 27 percent increase year over year.
The order of rank according to the base size remained almost constant with the largest TLDs remaining in the same rank order. The order is .com, .de, .cn, .net, .uk, .org, .info, .nl (The Netherlands), .eu (European Union), and .biz.
VeriSign processed peak loads of 48 billion Domain Name System (DNS) queries every day in the second quarter of 2008, showing millions of Internet users accessing Web sites. The VeriSign DNS maintained 100 percent uptime in second quarter of 2008 like past years.

VeriSign provides the briefing to highlight the trends in domain name registration, including key performance indicators, and growth opportunities. The Domain Name Brief also shows growth for domain name registrations globally, with a focus on Latin America. The growth in .com and .net domain name registrations in Latin America for the quarter saw a 31 percent growth, leading the worldwide growth by 11 percentage points. This growth shows increased access, connectivity and usage across the world.
