INSIGHT Research: Spending on Mobile Content Tools to Top $8 Billion During 2008
By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor
In a new report, INSIGHT Research predicted that more than $8 billion will be spent globally this year on mobile content creation, management and distribution tools by music/game publierhs, TV broadcasters, video production companies, content aggregators and telecom carriers.
“Today’s tools are able to manage various types of content and put specific types of content on to specific devices,” said Robert Rosenberg, president at INSIGHT Research, in a statement. “What is truly needed, however, and what we expect to see emerge over the next few years, are tools that unlock the value of content in the digital age by formatting and managing content for device-independence.”
Rosenberg added: “When content becomes reusable across multiple delivery channels its value increases enormously, which will foster investment in developing the next generation of content management tools.”
The report, “Content Management for Wireless Networks, 2008-2013,” describes the technology and market forces that are required to put music, video and other types of information and content on to mobile devices. INSIGHT found that current content management systems are primarily focused on the delivery of the content to a specific device type, but predicted that attention will shift during the forecast period from discrete systems focusing on delivery of specific content using rudimentary content management integration to full-blown systems that are centered on reusable content suitable for multi-channel delivery.
The report also presents a working taxonomy of the various tools available to manage content, with a particular focus on those requirements specific to mobile and fixed line operators. Digital asset management and digital rights management (DRM) systems help to exploit the information, while content management systems are related to creating, managing and delivering the content. The study also discusses the standards being developed to realize knowledge management systems, including MPEG-7, the semantic Web and standards like RDF/OWL and Topic Maps.
