Dell'Oro Reveals 10 Gigabit Ethernet Switch Market Passed $600M

A recent market research report from Dell' (News - Alert)Oro Group has revealed that the 10 Gigabit Ethernet Switch market recently surpassed two major milestones. The report found that the revenue generated from shipping 250 thousand 10 Gigabit Ethernet Switch ports in the second quarter of 2008 has surpassed $600 million.

Dell’Oro Group provides in-depth, objective research and analysis that enables component manufacturers, equipment vendors, and investment firms to make fact-based, strategic decisions. They claim that they are the trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries.

Gigabit Ethernet (GbE or 1 GigE) is a term describing various technologies for transmitting Ethernet frames at a rate of a gigabit per second, as defined by the IEEE (News - Alert) 802.3-2005 standard. Half-duplex gigabit links connected through hubs are allowed by the specification but in the marketplace full-duplex with switches is the norm.

“Convergence towards Ethernet in the wiring closet and data center continues to drive consolidation in the market,” said Alan Weckel, senior analyst at Dell’Oro Group.

“End user demand for a wiring closet solution that’s complete with voice, security, and wireless LAN features continues to cause vendors to look towards partnerships or acquisitions to offer holistic solutions. Recent examples of the changing vendor landscape include the Siemens (News - Alert) joint venture that combines Enterasys with Siemens enterprise voice and HP ProCurve’s acquisition of Colubris for wireless LAN,” Weckel added.

The report also addresses the Layer 4-7 application and traffic management market, which with new product announcements such as Cisco’s (News - Alert) Ace Appliance, Citrix’s MPX, and F5’s VIPRION, outgrew the overall Ethernet Switch market during the quarter.

Brocade, who deals in data center networking solutions and services, recently bought Foundry. Dell’Oro explains that the convergence towards Ethernet as the fabric for storage and networking led to this purchase.

The Dell’Oro Group Ethernet Switch Quarterly Report offers complete, in-depth coverage of the market with tables covering manufacturers’ revenue, average selling prices, and port shipments (by speed Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet) for Layers 2-3 (both managed and unmanaged) and Layers 4-7.
