Shipment of SuperSpeed USB-Enabled Devices Will Surpass 1 Billion Mark in 2014: In-Stat

Market intelligence firm In-Stat (News - Alert) has released the report of a new research entitled, USB by Device, Q1’12 Forecast. The report provides forecasts of the worldwide USB device market for the 2010-2015 periods with detailed segmentation by device type and technology.

In this report In-Stat maintained that SuperSpeed USB-enabled device shipments are on a fast track and predicted that the shipment of these devices will surpass 1 billion in 2014. In 2011, the industry recorded 70 million shipments for such products.

Since 1996 USB has been used for simplifying the connection between PCs and peripherals. With devices and media formats converging and increasing numbers of sophisticated peripherals hitting the markets ever day, demands for significantly higher bus bandwidth has become imperative. USB 3.0, or SuperSpeed USB, addresses this need by facilitating higher transfer rate to match these new usage and devices

SuperSpeed USB is used to bring significant performance enhancements to the ubiquitous USB standard. This new generation of USB is compatible with the billions of USB-enabled devices currently deployed in the market. In addition of delivering a data transfer rate 10 times greater, SuperSpeed USB will also offer improved power efficiency.

In its report InStat clarified that in the first phase, the adoption of SuperSpeed USBs will be lesser than those of the full- and high-speed USB. The adoption of SuperSpeed USB will be higher in the markets, where data transfer requirements are rapidly growing.

“Because the throughput of SuperSpeed USB, ten times that of high-speed USB, is not required in some devices, adoption will not initially be as broad as for full- and high-speed USB. However, SuperSpeed USB will gain significant initial penetration in markets requiring transfers of increasingly larger pools of data. This process is already well underway, as evidenced in the USB Implementer Forum’s December announcement that Intel’s (News - Alert) 7 Series PC Chipset and C216 PC Chipset family achieved SuperSpeed USB certification, guaranteeing increased SuperSpeed penetration of the PC market,” Research Director at In-Stat Brian O’Rourke explained in a statement.

The report also predicted that notebooks will be the single largest device that will ship with SuperSpeed USB capability in 2015. The shipment of High-Speed USB-enabled device will take its peak in 2012. The reoiort also predicted that in 2015, 5.5 billion devices will ship with some type of USB capability.

Earlier this month, Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (News - Alert), the market leader in USB controllers, announced USB-IF certification of its two SuperSpeed USB Peripheral Controllers: EZ-USB FX3 and West Bridge Benicia. EZ-USB FX3 is one of the first USB 3.0 peripheral controllers in the industry, and the only programmable solution.
