ABI Research Releases Results of Important TV Viewer Study
By Brian Solomon, TMCnet Web Editor
ABI Research (News - Alert) conducted an online survey last December of 1,002 consumers. The purpose was to discover how US residents look at their service providers, what programming and technologies they use, and what difference, if any, price made on their choice of available service offerings. The details of the survey have been published in a free white paper available on the firm’s website.
“Americans do a lot of time-shifting with PVRs, and a lot of gaming, and plenty of people have installed home theaters,” said ABI Research VP Scan Schatt. “They are likely to consume a lot more video over the next several years.”
There are billions of dollars at stake in how viewers respond to triple/quadruple play services and demand IPTV
, which makes the information in the survey of great interest to providers.
Among the survey’s findings:
- More than one quarter of participants selected their pay-TV provider based on price. Convenience and promotional offers accounted for another quarter. Programming quality and customer service, however, mattered to little more than 15%.
- 38% of those who responded had game consoles or home theater systems attached to their TVs. Almost the same amount used DVRs. Only a few used network media adaptors or the Slingbox.
- Mobile TV appealed to only 6% of the participants. More than a third of the respondents said they would not pay for any of the common add-on services.
