Infonetics: FMC Market to Reach $46.3B in 2010
By Prabhala Ranga Sai, TMCnet Contributor
The Global market for FMC (fixed mobile convergence) will reach to $ 46.3 billion level by 2010, according to a new report from Infonetics titled " FMC Equipment, Phones, and Subscribers Market Outlook."
The FMC market includes UMA (unlicensed mobile access) network controllers, multi- access convergence gateways, and dual mode cellular/WiFi
phones. The report also cited several examples and current ground realities to say that UMA will stay longer than telecom pundits expected.
UMA
has seen the most significant push, triggered by intense competition, according to the report. The fiercest battles are coming from Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK.
The report forecasted worldwide and regional market size, select market share, and forecasts from 2006 to 2010 for UNCs, MACGs, dual service phones, UMA and IMS
seamless FMC phones, and FMC subscribers in North America, EMEA, Asia Pacific, CALA, and worldwide.
"UMA, which was believed to have short legs just a year ago, is the predominant technology deployed today to implement seamless FMC between wireless LAN
and 2G cellular networks. For those who still believe UMA will be short lived, it can now support 3G, is backed by the 3GPP, has a clear migration roadmap to IMS, and is becoming the default case for femtocells," said Stéphane Téral, principal analyst at Infonetics Research.
Other key findings of the study include:
- Large European telcos such as BT, France Télécom, and TeliaSonera have been leading the charge to offer UMA-based seamless dual mode WiFi (News - Alert)/cellular services
- Nokia leads the worldwide dual mode cellular/WiFi phone market followed by Sony Ericsson (News - Alert) and Motorola
- Today all UMA network controllers (UNCs) are sold with dual mode handsets in mind, but soon likely will be sold for femtocell- only applications
- The number of worldwide seamless FMC subscribers is expected to skyrocket from 188,000 in 2006 to 38.2 million in 2010
- The VCC standard has been delayed, and as a result, VCC is now fully tied to IMS
- Multi-access convergence gateways (MACGs) have the potential to become the largest FMC equipment market worldwide.
