It’s the perfect storm. Mobile video and conferencing are converging.

The mobile video industry is poised for unprecedented growth not seen since the computer telephony revolution of the ‘90s. Meanwhile, Frost & Sullivan reports the world videoconferencing market earned revenues of more than $440.6 million in 2009 and predicts it will reach $1,134.9 million in 2015. Factor in continued demand for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets with advanced video communications capabilities, as well as, the costeffective multimedia processing technologies for realtime video communications, and indeed, you have the perfect storm. As a result, the entire industry can be transformed by a chain reaction where the rapidly increasing demand meets the disruptive growth on the supply side.

Mobile videoconferencing could very well be the next major mobile killer app.

Easing the Pain of Connecting Remote Offices/Workers to an Asterisk Infrastructure

The challenges of deploying a distributed communications system are numerous. In many cases, a separate VPN appliance must be installed for remote offices/workers to use IPbased deskphones, impeding the growth of these services outside of the enterprise network.

Session Border Controllers offer the ability to securely connect remote offices and employees so that they have the same level of service and session quality as within the corporate headquarters. By managing such tasks as border traversal, they vastly simplify the process while providing secure, high quality voice communications between branch offices, remote users and headquarter offices. Secure Communications and Collaborations: Crossing the Chasm
Businesses are aggressively leveraging shared IP network to easily deploy next generation communications and collaborative applications and services such as Voice, Video and UC over IP.The Promise & Challenges: Migration to IP presents great promise and business agility but also comes up with several security risks and deployment challenges that have traditionally plagued data networks over the past decade.

The Rising Vulnerabilities: Several UC vendors are publicly announcing critical security vulnerabilities in their core communications & collaborative infrastructure. Just in the last year alone, there were several 100s of reported vulnerabilities by various UC vendors with close to several 1000s of separate attack incidents reported and still growing at large.

Gartner quotes that Enterprises that dont spend on IP Telephony Security today will end up spending 20% of their Security Operations Budget on it in 2012. Enterprises that are proactive in nature will only spend 5% of IP Telephony Security. In addition, compliance requirements such as HIPAA, GLBA, SOX and PCI are mandating that institutions implement strong security measures to secure their UC environments.

This talk provides ane executive level view of the UC network what it means, what are the moving parts, what are roles/actors in the network, where are the common mistakes etc.?

The attendee will understand the deep network topology, architectural differences and technology differences when deploying these real time applications. The Crowd Moves to the Cloud!
In this recessionary environment, CIOs face business challenges that pull them in different directions – they need to reduce dependence on outdated equipment, ensure reliability, and deliver updated technology to increase revenue , all while reducing costs. The Cloud offers an opportunity for CIOs to reduce capital expenditure and source the latest in technology and infrastructure with less investment risk.

Are CIOs Really Adopting the Cloud?

Both business executives and IT executives are interested in moving to the Cloud. According to an end of 2010 survey of 1,050 global respondents by HfSResearch, Cloud Will Transform Business As We Know It: The Secrets in the Source, both IT and business executives see the cloud as “an enabling business service or IT delivery model that drives innovation in organizations.” This study says that 55% of IT and 65% of business executives recognize that the cloud drives down the overall cost of running business applications. According to the survey, there is significant interest in increasing spending on cloud services: over 20% of business executives and over 10% of IT Executives interviewed expected to spend over 20% of their departmental IT budgets on cloud services in the next 18 months, and over 20% of business executives and about 20% of IT executives expected to spend 10% to 20% of their departmental IT budgets on cloud services.

The market for CaaS and Hosted Contact Centers specifically has strong momentum and is expected to continue to grow. In the North American Hosted Contact Center Markets study , Frost & Sullivan projects that hosted contact centers will have a CAGR of 32% from 20072015. A Forrester Consulting study commissioned by HP forecasts a CAGR of 31% by 2014. In the Forrester Consulting study, 58% of the 900 SMBs interviewed expressed interest in purchasing an IP Contact Center as a Service.Does the Cloud Really Make my Contact Center Cheaper, Faster, and Better?

Frost & Sullivan’s Premise vs. Hosted Contact Center: Total Cost of Ownership Analysis shows that outsourcing contact centers to a hosted provider reduces the total cost of contact center ownership over premise systems in 35 years. The study showed that, the larger the contact center is, the higher the savings. Also, the more functions hosted in the cloud, the higher the savings. Savings were up to 43% for 500 seats completely hosted in the cloud, according to this study.

Lowering total cost is not the only convenience of cloudbased call center services. Hosted contact centers can support a widely distributed workforce, including athome agents or remote locations. The cloud facilitates rapid deployment and scalability as business needs change. A hosted call center service can help address seasonality or act as a backup system or disaster recovery for premisebased services.What Concerns Do CIOs Have About the Cloud?

CIOs’ main concerns about using the cloud for infrastructure or other core services are reliability, security in a sharedservice model, and loss of control. Outsourcing any business process to the Cloud will still require some expert management inhouse, and a backup plan, but the cloud can also offer multisourcing and redundancy. Managers should check the security and reliability of any cloud service before adopting it, and consider SLAs with cloud service providers to ensure that their needs are met.

In Conclusion
The Cloud allows CIOs to source the latest technology without major capital investment and less investment risk. Studies indicate that CommunicationsasaService and Hosted Contact Center Services are growing rapidly. Cloud based contact center services can save money on the total cost of operations, and are progressively more available, flexible, scalable, stable and reliable. As cloud based services mature, adopting these will continue to become easier and less expensive, and CIOs will become increasingly comfortable with managing them.

Case study about replacing a Legacy Telephony into an IP Telephony at UNESP.

With presence over 23 cities of the São Paulo State in Brazil, 35 different sites and more than 12.000 extensions at an annual cost of $600,000 with telephony, UNESP realized the need of updating itsexistent telephony system, looking for a integrated solution.

In 2005 has began the VoIP pilot project, named VoIP unespNET, having a central Asterisk server and about 1.000 SIP extensions strategically distributed between the university campuses, being able to reduce communication cost among those campuses.

As this Pilot Project was successful, we begun our first 100% PABX IP deployment in 2007 at the Rectory new Building, around 340 extensions, creating a new Project named UNESPs IP Telephony Project, which was expanded to 3 more campuses in 2009, reaching 1.200 SIP extensions at its total besides the 1.000 remaining from the Pilot Project. Based on the end of the rental contract of the legacy PBX on some campuses, and regarding the old PBX obsolence, a complete schedule has been defined in order to install the UNESPs IP Telephony Project, based on the rental contract expiration date as first priority, which has its mass deployment started in june of 2010.

With these components mentioned above was created the TELEPHONY KIT sent to each university campus.

Structure:
Network:• Deployed apart from the data and video network, using a network class and vlan only for VoIP, allowing a better qos policy.
• Communication structure between campuses through high velocity wan links.

IP Telephony Asterisk:
Structure composed by two servers, one working as a telephony gateway having voice boards, the second replacing the legacy PBX as a virtual machine.

Deployment:
The first step of deployment is the interconnection between mediagateway and the legacy PBX, through the E1 voice boards, so the mediagateway was placed between the PSTN and the legacy PBX, redirecting all incoming calls from PSTN to the legacy PBX, keeping the legacy and IP telephony structure paralelly, until the completion of IP telephony deployment:

PSTN <> MEDIAGATEWAY <> LEGACY PBX

Allowing a campus with the legacy PBX as main telephony system using some advantages of IP telephony system, including making and receiving calls through VoIP at zero cost. After the first part concluded, its deployed a virtual machine that will replace the legacy PBX. Using a information gathered on each campus, was possible to populate the Asterisk database and create the autoprovisioning files making it easier to deploy the IP telephones. Finished all stability tests and IP telephones deployment, the Legacy PBX shutdown is performed, therefore, VoIP would be the only active telephony system.With the IP Telephony Project bringing cost reductions, easy growth, better quality on calls, among other advantages to the university, some goals are programmed for 2012 as:
• Hire Cheap Minutes contracts along with VoIP Providers
• High availability Telephony System
• FAX Servers

Today the university has 28 sites that completely migrated into IP Telephony, making use of the network data to communicate with each other at no cost, remaining only 7 sites to be deployed, having as end date prediction by mid 2012, finishing the IP Telephony Project deployment.
