Disaster Communications Press Conference

Technology Marketing Corporation (TMC) today announced that it will host a special meeting and press conference focusing on communications continuity and disaster preparedness, for both government and the enterprise, in conjunction with the Enterprise Communications Association (ECA), at this month's INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO Fall 2005. The conference runs from October 24-27, 2005, and is being held at the Los Angeles Convention Center, with the aforementioned events scheduled for Wednesday, October 26.

In the wake of recent hurricane disasters on the United States Gulf Coast, and the well-documented communications failures in New York City on September 11, 2001, Max Schroeder, Enterprise Communications Association media relations committee chairman and liaison to TMC, approached Rich Tehrani, TMC president and Internet Telephony Conference & EXPO chairman, on how leading industry practitioners could contribute in an effort to avoid such problems in future disasters.

A press conference will be held on Wednesday, October 26, at 11:30 AM. Speakers will be Rich Tehrani and Max Schroeder, who will both outline the plans for the forum's structure and launch.

A subsequent meeting will also be held on Wednesday, October 26, facilitating further discussion with companies and other associations interested in participating in the forum, and instructions on how they can become engaged.

Inveneo Bicycle-Powered VoIP Demonstration

Toshiba Session
Toshiba Session

Come see Inveneo in Booth 544.

Inveneo has built a Linux-based PC with a VoIP connection that's powered by either a bicycle or solar panel. This "rugged-tized" solution is designed to withstand the African climate and has no moving parts and is designed to be serviced remotely, if required.

Inveneo, working with various international relief organizations, is installing this "VoIPcycle" in remote African villages that have neither electricity nor phone access. Through a series of transmitters and receivers, the Inveneo solution hopscotches to the nearest PSTN connection thus providing telephone and Internet service.

Inveneo will set up the bicycle (on a frame especially designed by Inveneo to be easily copied by local blacksmiths) which is connected to a battery, which in turn powers the Linux box, connected to the VoIP gear, connected to an antenna!

Keynote by CEO of BrandX, Jim Pickrell

Presentation: Wednesday, October 26, 2005, 8:00am - 8:30am

Leading CLECs' fight against FCC for line access

In a recent supreme court decision (Brand X V. FCC) the court ruled against Pickrell and his allies in the independent ISP world, and apparently has given permission to the FCC to put all independent ISP's out of business, by allowing the telephone companies to lock them out of line access. If telephone companies don't have to sell lines, and these same companies own all the radio spectrum that could provide wireless alternatives, then ISP's have no way to reach their customers. The question then becomes - what opportunities are left to the independent internet company? At Brand X the solution is a combination of running their own wires on telephone poles, to go around uncooperative cable and telephone monopolies, as well as seeking new profit centers, such as VOIP and TV, to increase revenue and cover construction costs.

Pickrell will discuss the huge opportunities that things such as CLEC registration, fiber and cable wiring, AC power data transmission, and other new technology may represent. If Cable and Telephone companies aren't willing to cooperate, the solution may be to go around them completely.

Choosing the correct IP-PBX for your enterprise is no small challenge. With myriad solutions available, some from new players, other from legacy providers, whose solution is best for your particular installation? One size does not fit all. In some instances strong legacy support will be critical. In others, standards compliance will be crucial.  In other situations, branch office support at a low cost or centralized management features will be important to consider. Will the new IP-PBX work well with your current infrastructure? Do you need to rip it out and rebuild? What about support, security and service. This panel will strive to answer important questions from the audience and give you a unique perspective on what items to consider before selecting a solution that is right for your enterprise.
