Achieving True QoS When Deploying VoIP

Managing VoIP QoS is complex because it involves both data and voice components that are in different networks, have different support organizations, and have different philosophies. If both networks are to converge, IP networks (i.e., data) must be enhanced with mechanisms to ensure the QoS to that of voice networks. Explore why voice quality is best viewed from an end-to-end perspective; that is, regardless of what technologies are employed, metrics must be measured in terms of the end user's experience. The end user's qualitative perception can make measuring these metrics quite challenging.

The requirements for various VoIP applications vary significantly and continuously increase in complexity. These applications are many, encompassing wireline, wireless (Wi-Fi and 3G), residential terminal adapters (TA), IP-PBX, and various gateways. The technical and service requirements trickle down the "food chain" to the underlying silicon. With advances in system on chip (SoC) VoIP silicon, it is not an exaggeration to talk about TA-on-a-chip, IP-PBX-on-a-chip, or even GW-on-a-chip. While complex advanced silicon is being pulled by different applications in somewhat different directions, there are basic commonalities.
