Los Angeles 2004: SIP Workshop

  Sponsored By:

Day 3 — Wednesday, October 6

8:15 - 9:15 am
The Basics of SIP

Alan Percy, Director Business Development, AudioCodes
SIP, or Session Initiation Protocol, is (as the name implies) a next-gen protocol designed for use in call setup and call control. And as ubiquitous as this protocol may seem if you were to look at any vendor's marketing materials, SIP is far from being deployed everywhere. But that is changing. SIP is constantly evolving. This session will serve as an introduction to SIP; what it is, and how developers can take advantage of all it has to offer. Other topics of discussion include SIP and 3G wireless, the use of SIP in next-gen cable telephony, SIP's role in Presence and Instant Messaging technologies, and more.

1:00 - 1:45 pm
Leveraging SIP for Advanced Services

Subhash Verma, VP Technology, Baypackets,
SIP is proving itself to be the signaling protocol for the next generation of telecom networks. Its flexibility and multimedia session capabilities make SIP ideal for implementing advanced telecom services, and we expect to see a growing number of SIP-based next generation network implementations, especially with the acceptance of SIP by the wireless community. The speaker will explore how SIP can exploit session establishment, mobility, presence, and instant messaging capabilities to provide advanced telecom services.

2:00 - 2:45 pm
SIP? NAT? NOT! Traversing the Firewall for SIP Call Completion

Jim Greenway, VP of Marketing, Kagoor Networks
Steve Johnson, President, Ingate Systems

Securing the network has always been of utmost importance, but it's become an even more pressing issue these days. Carriers thinking about implementing SIP in their networks have a number of concerns at the network's edge, including the need to assert some sort of control on the signaling and media streams entering the network, the need to prevent unauthorized access, and how to deal with Network Address Translation (NAT) issues that would otherwise render the network useless to SIP calls. Join us for this session as we delve into the world of SIP, and the protocol's relationship with NATs, firewalls, and so much more.

3:00 - 3:45 pm
The Role of Presence in a Pervasively Mobile Society

Alex Shneyderman, Senior Product Manager, Dynamicsoft
In a pervasively mobile society, access to information is no longer determined by the availability of communication media but rather by the subscriber's willingness and ability to communicate. This paradigm prompts operators to look for new ways to increase their subscriber's monthly minutes of use to drive revenue through new applications and services. This session will examine the fundamentals of presence technologies and standards and their applicability to various VoIP technologies, systems, and network environments. The speaker will address the specific limitations of current systems such as Push-to-Talk and mobile instant messaging as well as other operator requirements.

4:00 - 4:45 pm
Enabling SIP Services at the Edge

Micaela Giuhat, AVP Product Management, Netrake
The future of voice networking will be based on SIP. Only SIP allows for true intelligence at the edge. The question is, how do we mobilize on SIP and move forward while a number of vendors are interpreting SIP standards and versions differently? Although SIP promises to usher in a new era of applications and ultimately new revenue opportunities for service providers, the challenge today is achieving transparency and equivalency for ubiquitous SIP deployments. This session will address the challenges, promising technologies, and architectures that will enable prime time SIP service revenue and applications. The key will be an architecture that includes mediation of SIP at the edge of the network.

Day 4 — Thursday, October 7

8:15 - 9:00 am
SIP-Based Enterprise Communications Platforms

Pat Rudolph, Vice President, 3COM
SIP, like the Internet, possesses the ability to become a great ensign for service innovation. Voice solution developers must innovate and provide differentiating services that captivate and retain enterprise users. SIP is becoming the tool for solution providers to introduce new and unique services to their customers. Next generation SIP-based platforms will soon replace existing PBX platforms and traditional communication services. With unified communications across multiple devices and interfaces, users can leverage their customer communications and increase efficiency and productivity.

12:30 - 1:15 pm
SIP: Savior of Unified Messaging?

Mike James, Director of Business Development, Data Connection
The idea of integrating voice mail, e-mail, Web mail, and fax has been around for years. Termed unified messaging, the deployment experience has been as yet disappointing. Disparate technologies and interfaces led to a confusing user experience, and Service Providers struggled to find a real market. More recently, the concept has merged with real-time capabilities such as IM/Presence and audio/video/data conferencing, under the Unified Communications (UC) banner, leveraging SIP as the underlying call protocol. After many years of unfulfilled expectations, the various technologies that comprise UC are reaching a level of maturity and sophistication that start to show real convergence. Come discover the role of SIP in the renaissance of Unified Communications.

1:30 - 2:15 pm
The Business Case for SIP Conferencing

Ray J. Adensamer, Marketing Manager, Convedia Corporation
This session will develop a financial analysis and business case comparing two alternative service delivery infrastructures for audio and video conferencing servers — a TDM-based "Service Node" approach, and a next-generation VoIP service infrastructure. The session will explain how carrier class IP media servers offer capital cost reductions and operational savings when compared to traditional media processing technology, while enhancing revenues and service penetration with new convenient features such as self-subscription Service Portals, multimodal conferencing, or Web-based moderator GUIs. An ROI-based business case will be presented to justify how traditional carriers dependent on TDM-based access networks can reduce conferencing operational expenses with a next generation VoIP service infrastructure.

2:30 - 3:15 pm
Deploying SIMPLE in the Enterprise

Rick Ringel, Director of Engineering, Media Applications, Inter-Tel
This session will provide an overview of the SIMPLE standard (SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions) for enterprises looking to deploy the protocol into their infrastructure. Discussion will include a review of SIP and the architecture needed to support it, a full explanation of the SIMPLE protocol and its relationship with SIP, and SIMPLE-centric applications like Presence Management, Instant Messaging, and mobility tools. Security and third-party development will also be explored.

3:30 - 4:15 pm
Session Border Control for Hosted SIP-Based Services
Kevin Klett, VP Product Management, Acme Packet
Hosted SIP-based services offer service providers new revenue opportunities and often provide access into new markets. These services, such as subscriber-based IP Centrex or residential broadband VoIP, can be delivered over a variety of access technologies such as leased line, ATM, Frame Relay, DSL, and cable. Deploying a session border controller for hosted SIP-based service networks provides: Safe, reliable delivery of SIP applications across network borders; Protection of a provider’s service infrastructure and customer/supplier relationships; Ability to overcome the NAT barrier to the delivery of high margin multimedia services; Increased market reach and revenue by inter-working incompatible signaling; and many more benefits.

4:20 - 5:05 pm
Developing IP Mobile Services
Arjun Roychowdhury, Hughes Software Systems
With wireline and wireless carriers scrambling to introduce SIP based services, the focus on making SIP ready for real time deployment has become a priority now. While the wireline market has achieved a great deal of success in the past one year with revenue earning deployments, the challenge is still very real and more serious in the mobile space. This presentation will highlight the challenges, trends, issues that are faced by SIP in this fast evolving segment as well as what is being done to solve the issues facing carriers.
