Penn State University Receives IBcon's Digie Award for Most Intelligent Building Project

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. and SEATTLE, June 14, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Tempered Networks, Inc., the pioneer of Identity Defined Networking (IDN), today announced that Penn State University was honored with the prestigious IBcon Digie Award at the annual IBcon event focused on smart, connected, high performance intelligent buildings. Penn State University (PSU) was recognized for its innovation and success in deploying the ‘Most Intelligent Building Project’ in a college campus.

“It’s gratifying to have our smart building and IoT efforts acknowledged by the industry’s foremost entity focused on driving innovation and efficiency across real estate operations,” said Tom Walker, Systems Design Specialist at Penn State University. “Our increasingly connected world can certainly bring exciting opportunities and efficiencies, but we can only be successful if we can network systems in a highly secure and scalable way. We’re pleased that our team is making transformational contributions to advance smart building projects and initiatives in the market.”

Penn State University – Smart Building Project

PSU’s facility automation services group handles functions including automation engineering, network administration, and monitoring the university’s digitally connected buildings. PSU used micro-segmentation technology from Tempered Networks to isolate and cloak BACnet traffic from its smart building systems, which encompasses more than 600 buildings. Using Tempered Networks’ Identity Defined Networking solution, PSU was able to reduce its network attack surface and centralize control of hundreds of BACnet systems—without disrupting the legacy network—at a fraction of the time and a quarter of the cost of traditional alternatives like VLANs, firewalls, ACLs, etc.

The judges for the Digie awards selected PSU based on these substantial project outcomes:

  • With limited resources and a tight timeline, PSU plant staff completely restructured the network, segmenting the BACnet traffic into one of the most sophisticated university operational networks in the world.
  • Converged networks from multiple building systems including building automation, wastewater, water treatment, steam plants, electrical distribution, elevators and others and are driving the data into an advanced analytics platform.
  • Encrypted segmentation in network design significantly reduced security risk while substantially reducing cost of implementation.

About IBcon Digie Awards
Realcomm has been presenting the "Digie" Awards (short for Commercial Real Estate Digital Innovation Awards) since 1999 to recognize those outstanding companies, real estate projects, technologies as well as the people who have gone “above and beyond” to positively impact the industry through the intelligent application of technology, automation and innovation. More details on the Digie Awards are here.

About Tempered Networks
Tempered Networks makes segmentation simple. We enable organizations to easily and instantly connect, segment, and manage any of their networked ‘things’ with native security and universal mobility. We believe security and simplicity should go hand-in-hand and that organizations should not have to compromise one for the other. Our Identity-Defined Networking (IDN) solution eliminates complexity and gives customers the freedom to connect anything without worry and get control over their networks. Customers achieve the benefits of Software Defined Networking, only promised by others, and ensures that their network is resilient, nimble, and manageable.
