Michigan Virtual Charter Academy to Hold Commencement Ceremony June 15

Michigan Virtual Charter Academy (MVCA) will celebrate the Class of 2018 at an in-person commencement ceremony on Friday, June 15 at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. An online public charter school for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade, MVCA is a tuition-free education option open to students statewide.

Among the Class of 2018's 202 students, graduates report having been accepted to colleges and universities across the country, including Arizona State University, Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Oakland Community College, Wayne State University, and Western Michigan University.

Blake McClellan will serve as class valedictorian, and plans to attend Oral Roberts University after a gap year. He will address his classmates at Friday's ceremony.

"Attending Michigan Virtual Charter Academy has allowed me to focus on my education and prepare for the future," said McClellan, who has been a student at the online school since the tenth grade. "Thanks to my supportive teachers and the chllenging classes, I've been able to achieve things I didn't think were possible before I started online school."

MVCA students access a robust curriculum in core subjects, as well as a host of electives. They attend live virtual classes taught by state-licensed teachers. In addition to online sessions, teachers regularly communicate with students and families via email and phone.

To foster a sense of school community outside of the virtual classroom, MVCA offers student clubs, in-person field trips and social gatherings. Graduation provides an opportunity for students to celebrate their accomplishments together.

Maggie Varney, founder and CEO of Maggie's Wigs 4 Kids of Michigan, will deliver the keynote address to the graduating class. Class salutatorian Madeeha Zindah will also speak at the ceremony.
