California Virtual Academies to Celebrate Class of 2018 with In-Person Graduation Ceremonies

This month, more than 800 students will earn their high school diplomas from the California Virtual Academies (CAVA) - nine independent online public charter schools throughout the state. Due to the large graduating class, CAVA will hold six in-person graduation ceremonies across California over the next week, with one in San Bernardino on June 7, one each in Fresno and San Gabriel on June 11, and one in San Diego and two in Vacaville on June 12.

A total of 59 CAVA students achieved a grade-point average of 4.0 or better throughout their high school careers to earn the title of valedictorian. CAVA @ Maricopa student Kevin Blum will deliver valedictory remarks at the San Bernardino ceremony on June 7, while Camryn Carpenter from CAVA @ Fresno and Gary Ruiz Navarro from CAVA @ Los Angeles will speak in Fresno and San Gabriel, respectively, on June 11. CAVA @ San Diego senior Aspen Buck will address her fellow graduates in San Diego on June 12, while Cole Kiser from CAVA @ Sonoma and Navjot Waraich from CAVA @ Sutter will speak in Vacaville during the morning ceremony, and Reilani Gervacio from CAVA @ San Mateo and Aaminah Bhula from CAVA @ San Joaquin will speak during the afternoon ceremony.

In addition, award-winning musical artist, inspirational speaker and entrepreneur Sade Champagne will serve as the keynote speaker for the San Bernardino, San Gabriel and San Diego graduations, while author Jeannette Paxia will speak in Fresno and Vacaville. Former CAVA valedictorian Zach Whitmore will also address the graduates in Fresno.

"At CAVA, our students are able to build a solid foundation for the next chapter in their lives," said CAVA head of school April Warren. "We know that they are well-prepared for whatever that next step may be."

Collectively, CAVA's graduates report that they have been accepted to colleges and universities throughout the state and across the country, including Arizona State University, Columbia University, Hrvard University, Napa Valley College, San Diego State University, Seton Hall University, Southern Utah University, Temple University, Texas Southern University, University of Nevada, University of Southern California, Whittier College and campuses across the California State University and University of California systems, including UCLA and UC-Berkeley.

Among CAVA's more than 800 graduates are 45 sophomores and juniors who are graduating early.

CAVA provides students in many counties across California with a learning environment that works for them. The rigorous curriculum includes an Advanced Learning Program, as well as honors and Advanced Placement® courses. Additionally, students have the opportunity to take concurrent enrollment courses to earn college credit while still in high school.

Students at CAVA have built strong relationships with their classmates during their time with the school. They interact with each other through their virtual classrooms, as well as discussion threads and instant messaging. Moreover, field trips, social events and clubs create a strong community throughout the school year. Graduation allows the students to celebrate their accomplishment together.

Students choose online school for a variety of reasons, including a safe learning environment, advanced learning options and the ability to support extracurricular pursuits or medical needs.
