Scientific Learning Enhances Reading Assistant Plus to Deliver One-of-a-Kind Guided Reading Support for Students

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) emphasizes the use of evidence-based interventions to help schools choose and implement programs that improve student outcomes. To provide schools with an evidence-based solution that quickly and effectively develops students' fluency, prosody, and comprehension, Scientific Learning Corp. (OTC PINK: SCIL) today announces new enhancements to the Reading Assistant Plus online guide reading tool.

According to ESSA, for an intervention to be supported by strong evidence, there must be at least one well-designed and well-implemented experimental study on the intervention. Reading Assistant Plus is part of the neuroscience-based Fast ForWord® online reading intervention, which has helped more than 2.8 million learners worldwide and has 21 studies that meet What Works Clearinghouse Evidence Standards for Adolescent Literacy, Beginning Reading, and English Language Development.

Among the new enhancements to Reading Assistant Plus is its availability on the iPad. Students can directly access the Reading Assistant Plus web app through the Safari web browser, eliminating the need to download the app. An additional enhancement is expanded content, with new fiction and nonfiction titles that provide developmentally appropriate content for students in grades 1-12. These include high-interest selections for middle and high school students needing intensive reading support.

For teachers, Reading Assistant Plus has a new Auto Initial Assignment feature that streamlines the student assignment process by assessing and placing each student in the appropriate content at the right starting point. This feature not only saves teachers time but it allows students to maximize their time in Reading Assistant, resulting in increased motivation and reading gains.

"Oral reading is critical to improving reading fluency, comprehension, and prosody. The enhancements to Reading Assistant Plus will enable schools to provide guided reading support to more students and at just the right level for each individual," said Jeffrey D. Thomas, co-chief executive officer of Scientific Learning. "Plus, with an expanded collection of high-interest content, schools can engage even the most reluctant readers and help students across a variety of reading levels improve their oral reading and silent reading skills."
