BioKansas Selects Luann Jung as 2018 Kansas BioGENEius Challenge Winner


BioKansas announced Luann Jung as the winner of the Kansas BioGENEius Challenge on Thursday, April 27, 2018 at Aratana Therapeutics. Luann, a senior from Manhattan High School, presented her research project entitled Genomic Indicators for Type II Diabetes, in which she developed novel computational methods that result in faster and more accurate analysis of genetic variants associated with type 2 diabetes.

As the winner of the Kansas BioGENEius Challenge, the premier competition for high school students conducting research in biotechnology across the region, Luann will advance to Boston, MA, to comete against other peers in the International BioGENEius Challenge at the BIO International Convention on June 4 - 7, 2018. Kansas has had two students in the last seven years go on to win the International BioGENEius Challenge.



Luann is a recent graduate of Manhattan High School and will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT (News - Alert)) in the fall, where she plans to continue studying computer and data science.

The Kansas BioGENEius Challenge is administered by BioKansas, the life science trade association in the state of Kansas representing more than 160 member organizations across the human, plant, animal and industrial biosciences and is sponsored this year by KCALSI, MilliporeSigma, Merck Animal Health, Hill's Pet Nutrition, KCAS, Missouri Valley PDA, Arvest Bank, and Aratana Therapeutics. Ninety-two student projects across the state were peer reviewed by scientists and leaders in the biotech industry for the award and 6 scholarships ranging in $150-$600 were awarded to Kansas BioGENEius Challenge Finalists.
