Medline Unveils New Solution to Wipe Out Pre-Op Bacteria at AORN Surgical Conference & Expo 2018

Clinicians looking for effective alternatives to decolonizing the nose before surgery will be among the first to check out the Ready.Set.Care. kit at the 2018 AORN Surgical Conference & Expo in New Orleans, March 24-28, at booth 829. The kit is among a number of products and solutions Medline will showcase that empower clinicians to better protect patients against surgical site infections (SSIs) from pre-op to post-op.

One Kit Takes Bundled Approach to Prevent HAIs

Staphylococcus aureus, a gram positive bacteria part of the normal flora of the body, is frequently found in the nose, respiratory tract and on the skin. However, research points to Staph aureus as the most common pathogen to cause two prevalent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs): SSIs and ventilator associated pneumonia or VAP. Clinicians seeking effective alternatives to prevent HAIs now have a new solution to consider at a time when multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs) are on the rise.

"Approximately 30 percent of the population is colonized with Staph aureus. By decolonizing or removing the bacteria with a bundled approach using effective, easy-to-use and non-resistant antiseptics, healthcare providers can feel confident when reassuring their patients about how this new solution can reduce the risk of HAIs - specifically SSIs," says Rosie D. Lyles, MD, clinical affairs director, Medline.

The Ready.Set.Care. kit, part of the perioperative ERASE SSI solution from Medline, helps wipe out pre-op bacteria. Nasal swabs are pre-saturated with povidone iodine. With oral bacteria replicating five times every 24 hours, the set also includes a Chlorhexidine gluconate oral rinse. Furthermore, Medline designed clinician feedback into the kit to help boost compliance through simple, clear language and visuals for added understanding.

Continuing Education

Also at AORN, Medline is offering exclusive, in-booth education for continuing education credit titled 'Step Up to Drive Down SSIs: Live and Learn the New Guidelines' to further enhance opportunities to put prevention into practice. The course will explore standardization's vital role when developing protocols to help reduce SSIs and how to effectively manage outcomes across care settings. In addition, educators will learn the latest evidence-based strategies to help drive down SSIs. After AORN, the course will be offered on Medline University, the largest, free online education platform with more than 200 courses for continuing education credit.

Medline will take you behind the scenes of AORN in a Facebook Live event on Monday, March 26 at 9:30 a.m. CDT (News - Alert), featuring Rosie Lyles. Join in on the conversation at https://www.facebook.com/MedlineIndustriesInc/.
