DoD Director James Thompson, FDA Quality Champion Francisco Vicenty to Keynote CMMI® Institute Capability Counts 2018 Conference

Department of Defense program head James Thompson and FDA Case for Quality leader Francisco (Cisco (News - Alert)) Vicenty will deliver keynotes at CMMI's Capability Counts 2018 set for 1-2 May 2018 in Reston, Virginia.

Thompson, Director of Major Program Support at the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (ODASD), will talk on DoD supply chain progress, challenges and opportunities. Vicenty, Case for Quality program manager within the Office of Compliance, Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will discuss the FDA's case for quality and efforts for improvements in the medical device industry.

Thompson is expected to highlight one of the biggest department challenges: the selection of contractors that meet software and performance requirements. His keynote remarks will be followed by a panel discussion to include Ron Lear, CMMI Institute director, IP development, focused on how the new CMMI V2.0 product suite can be used by the DoD and defense contractors to address their acquisition challenges and meet its needs for operational excellence.

On the healthcare industry front, the CDRH has set a strategy priority to improve access and outcomes for patients by engaging industry, payers, providers and patients to increase focus on the quality and performance of medical devices. Late last year, CMMI disclosed focused efforts to improve healthcare outcomes and patient safety when it announced the Patient Demographic Data Quality (PDDQ) framework, developed in partnership with the US Department of Health and Human Services' Office of the National Controller (ONC) for Health IT. The framework, based on CMMI's Data Management Maturity Model, aims to improve patient safety by helping organizations accurately and consistently match patient data internally as well as between organizations.

"Improving capability at the FDA has been key to operating more efficiently and effectively, allowing us to make strong strides towards our patient-centric goals," says Vicenty. "Beyond the medical device industry, professionals across all sectors and geographies can greatly benefit from addressing these processes."

Capablity Counts 2018 will feature the latest market trends, best practices, and success stories on how to streamline business processes and drive performance through capability. This year's event will offer a series of breakout sessions, panel discussions and interactive activities focused on delivering actionable insights on what it means to be a capable organization. Hundreds of global business leaders from an array of backgrounds, countries and experiences will gather to share best practices in performance and capability improvement. Conference attendees will take ready-to-use resources, tools and strategies from industry experts back to their organizations.

According to a recent CMMI Institute survey, executives know how critical capability building is for continued success. Nearly half of organizations surveyed do not have standard processes in place that enable them to adapt quickly, causing them to miss out on big business benefits.

"As Alexander Den Heijer said, 'When a flower doesn't bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower,'" said Becky Fitzgerald, Program Chair and Two Harbors Consulting Principal and Co-Founder. "By attending Capability Counts 2018, professionals can cultivate extraordinary results by adding needed capabilities to their environment."

Attendees can customize their schedule by selecting sessions from nine tracks focused on:

  • Innovative Approaches with CMMI
  • Business Results through CMMI
  • CMMI V2.0: Driving Performance through Capability
  • Achieving Capability in Regulated and Government Environments
  • CMMI in the Healthcare Industry
  • Manage Your Data for Peak Performance
  • Integrating Models, Standards, and Methodologies
  • Using Quantitative Techniques to Improve Performance
  • Organizational Transformation and Improvement

The conference will also feature CMMI's third annual Capability Challenge, which showcases leaders from around the world who are improving their business performance through building organizational capability. Three Capability Challenge finalists will advance to Capability Counts 2018, where one will be presented with an award as Capability Challenge Champion. In advance of the event, participants can view the eight entries and vote for their favorite.
