Asia Emerges as a Front Runner in the 5G Race

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- In a series of five whitepapers, Frost & Sullivan and Principal Global Investors explore the role 5G will play in reshaping global regions and industries. According to our collaborative analysis titled "Asia: Leading the race to 5G," Asia is expected to lead in the global rollout of 5G; Japan and South Korea, which already have extensive advanced communications networks, are the indisputable leaders. In addition, the Winter Olympic Games in South Korea has provided a global stage to showcase 5G technology.

India and China have 5G ambitions as well, and the emergence of 5G in these countries will have implications for the global economy.  Their large populations and expanding middle classes will attract investments; especially as manufacturing site selection becomes more dependent on proximity to end markets. 5G will push high-tech manufacturing in these countries, but it will also serve as a catalyst for adjacent technology areas, including blockchain and smart cities, and attract additional foreign investment.

"In China, what you are seeing is a massive amount of investment in 5G and other emerging technologies. China is addressing concerns over lowering the overall cost of manufacturing by increasing automation and connectivity," said Richard Sear, Partner and Senior Vice President of Frost & Sullivan's Visionary Innovation Group. "Further, China is interested in positioning the country as a leader in innovation and at the forefront of those industries that will dominate the next centur, such as autonomous vehicles, which will require a connectivity enabler like 5G."

Essentially, the race for 5G in Asia comes down to preserving economic growth. Developed countries, such as South Korea and Japan, require the most advanced connectivity networks to stay competitive through automation and robotics, especially because aging populations are likely to impact overall productivity.

"In countries where aging demographics are leading to declining productivity, 5G can serve as a stimulant to boost labor efficiencies and drive additional economic output. The Olympic Games in South Korea offer a first look at the potential implications of this technology and is something investors will be closely following," said Binay Chandgothia, Managing Director and Portfolio Manager for Principal Portfolio Strategies.

For investors, swift growth of 5G in Asia will serve as an indicator for the region's long-term economic prospects. In leading countries, 5G will provide an advantage for domestic industries in the global marketplace. The telecommunications equipment companies within countries that have nurtured 5G development also have an opportunity to set global standards and position themselves as dominant market players globally. In addition, an intra-regional 5G network has strong potential to increase overall supply chain efficiency, making Asia even more competitive moving forward.
