H&R Block Canada Live on Ultimate Software's UltiPro

Ultimate Software (Nasdaq: ULTI), a leading provider of human capital management (HCM) solutions in the cloud, announced today that H&R Block Canada Inc., the largest income-tax preparation and electronic-filing firm in Canada, has selected Ultimate's UltiPro to help manage business challenges related to scalability, complex payroll, and workforce analytics.

H&R Block Canada, a subsidiary of H&R Block Inc., has more than 50 years of Canadian tax-return experience. Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, the company serves Canadian taxpayers in 1,200 offices. The company scales its employee base from approximately 1,300 employees during pre-season to about 8,500 employees during peak season, onboarding about 6,500 employees during a three-week period and offboarding nearly 7,000 employees at the end of tax season. Prior to UltiPro, the organization was using an HCM solution provided by a payroll service bureau, but found that the system did not provide the level of depth or breadth of functionality, ease of use, reporting, and service that the company needed for future growth. H&R Block Canada selected UltiPro and was able to launch in just 18 weeks, going live in October 2017.

"The operational visibility provided by UltiPro helps us manage our dynamic workforce," said Claire McSorley, director of total rewards and HR systems at H&R Block Canada. "Seasonal employees work in several jobs with distinct responsibilities, and every job has multiple rates that vary from province to province and with experience. Managers now have the ability to view all their employees and sort variables such as status and rates with just a couple clicks. This simplified process enables our managers to supervise the entire lifecycle of our seasonal workers with ease."

Previously, seasonal workers' multiple roles had created payroll challenges that required manual, time-consuming oversight. According to McSorley, UltiPro has transformed the company's payroll process.

"Our prior system forced us to tie each job to a location and a rate. Employee roles that didn't fit cleanly into the solution could cause zero rates to flow into our labor management system, something that had to be corrected by hand," said McSorley. "UltiPro's flexible payroll solution has enabled us to untie the relationship between a department identification number and a job. We have also been able to optimize our timecards so employees can see only the jobs assigned to them, and further reduce the risk of error."

Because of the better data generated by UltiPro, managers are now able to view and monitor accurate labor costs on a daily basis.

"UltiPro's ability to process multiple jobs with multiple pay rates has improved our overall reporting and enhanced our decision making," said McSorley. "The reporting from our old system led our managers to believe their labor costs were under budget, until payroll was processed and the missing rates were corrected. Now, we are providing custom dashboards for our mangers that stream real-time labor costs and show accurate, updated budgets. A key focus at H&R Block Canada is the quality of the employee experience, and I am delighted to report that employees at all levels are thrilled by the way UltiPro is making their work easier and their jobs more productive."

"At Ultimate, we understand the importance of service, and we ensure customers are maximizing their solution with our industry-exclusive Customer Success Program," said Greg Swick, chief enterprise sales officer at Ultimate. "In the case of H&R Block Canada, we are pleased the company is taking immediate advantage of UltiPro's scalable-technology architecture, and the solution's ability to provide business decision makers with accurate, real-time data. We are also excited by the ongoing partnership and cultural fit between H&R Block and Ultimate Software, and the synergy of our collaborative workplaces that put people first."
