Marg - India's Oldest Art Magazine Launches its Digital Archive

MUMBAI, February 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ --

Marg magazine has launched its digital archive to mark its 71st year of continuous publication. Readers can now purchase every issue and article published since 1946 at http://www.marg-art.org/magazine.htmlMarg has also introduced digital subscriptions for its forthcoming issues.

Shyam Benegal, a trustee of The Marg Foundation, says, "Marg is the only Indian magazine devoted to the arts that continues to flourish even after seventy-one years of its existence. The high quality of the essays and articles has made each issue of Marg a valuable addition to the knowledge of arts in India."

The archive has over 270 magazines that are mostly out of print, and individuals and institutions across the world can now access rare and valuable writing by some of the best minds in the field.

"Born just before India's independence and cast from the mould of liberal values, Marg had adopted, ahead of its time, a holistic approach to India's arts to include scupture, painting, architecture and design, as well as the performing arts, while not losing sight of the vernacular arts and crafts, photography, cinema and the modern and contemporary practices. As Marg goes digital, it will serve as a reference pool and historiography of Indian art writing over a century," says Jyotindra Jain, Co-Editor of Marg.

As Naman Ahuja, Co-Editor of Marg, puts it, "The digital platform makes Marg's rich photographic archives along with the pioneering interpretations in its old issues available to the public. It also allows us to further scholarship in a unique way by permitting easy access, enter new discussion forums, and opens vistas anew for showcasing changing analysis."

The digitization of the Marg archive has been facilitated by generous support from the Tata Trusts. Over 30,000 pages were professionally scanned and meticulously checked to maintain the integrity of the magazines.

"Few organizations have taken on the complex job of digitizing resources on Indian art in India. Marg has taken its first big step to open the way for its authors to reach new audiences," adds Naman Ahuja.
