THIS WEEK: 1,101 Events and Activities in Pennsylvania to Raise Awareness About School Choice

School Choice Week began in Pennsylvania and across America this Sunday, with the goal of raising awareness about the options that parents have for their children's education.

The Week will feature 1,101 events and activities across the Keystone State, including open house events at schools, school fairs, homeschool information sessions, and other celebrations. In addition, a rally is planned on Friday, January 26 at the Soldiers and Sailors Hall in Pittsburgh.

Nationwide, 32,240 events and activities are being organized to raise awareness during National School Choice Week (Jan. 21-27, 2018), and nearly 7 million Americans are expected to participate. It will be the largest series of education-related events and activities in U.S. history.

The Week brings attention to the different education environments that are available for Pennsylvania's more than 2.7 million children. For example, families in Pennsylvania can choose from traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online academies, and homeschooling. The state also offers a private school choice program and tuition-free, public online schooling.

The counties of Blair, Berks, Somerset, and Venango, the boroughs of Bradford Woods, Brookhaven, Castle Shannon, Catawissa, Clarks Summit, Dravosburg, Freeport, Hanover, Gettysburg, Canton, Irwin, Churchill, and the cities of Bethel Park, Fawn, East Nottingham, Luran, Norristown, Oil City, Paxtang, Pottsville, Richland, Swatara, Telford Borough, Vanport, Union, Union, and Upper Yoder have issued proclamations recognizing School Choice Week in their community.

"School choice empowers parents to select the option that works best for each child-because no single school, no matter how good or well-funded, can meet the distinct needs of each and every young American," said Ana Meyers, executive director of Pennsylvania Coalition of Public Charter Schools.

Celebrated since 2011, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort. The Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and it is not related to any legislative advocacy campaign.

"Pennsylvania has been a national leader when it comes to providing school options for families, and National School Choice Week is a great time for parents to research the educational choices available for their kids," said Andrew Campanella, president of National School Choice Week.
