Tinder and Instagram Make the Blacklisted Apps List in Appthority Q4 Enterprise Mobile Security Pulse Report

Appthority, the global leader in enterprise mobile threat protection, today released its Enterprise Mobile Security Pulse Report for Q4 2017, which details the apps most frequently blacklisted by enterprise mobility and security teams. For iOS devices, popular dating app Tinder made the list of most blacklisted apps, joining WhatsApp Messenger and Pokémon GO, which topped the list for the second consecutive quarter. For Android, the top blacklisted apps were WhatsApp Messenger, Facebook (News - Alert) Messenger and Instagram, all new to the list from the previous quarter.

Enterprises blacklist apps for a range of security concerns, including security policy compliance and concerns about data handling. Most of the Android (News - Alert) and iOS apps that were blacklisted in Q4 scored in the data leakage range. For Android, this was primarily due to sending data unencrypted. For iOS, this was for accessing the address book, camera and microphone, as well as tracking location and sending sensitive data unencrypted.

"With our latest Pulse (News - Alert) Report, we continue to see enterprises being exposed to data leakage and privacy risks from many commonly used apps," stated Domingo Guerra, president and co-founder of Appthority. "Our goal with these reports is to provide mobility and security teams with insights into app risks that will help them make informed enterprise policies and protect their employees and valuable corporate data."

In addition to blacklisted apps, the Pulse Report also looks at the most comon apps found in enterprise environments and their associated risk. The research shows that many popular apps present in enterprise environments have mobile threat risk scores indicative of data leakage and vulnerabilities. Based on the prevalence in enterprises and Appthority's proprietary Mobile Threat Risk Score, the riskiest Android apps in enterprise environments include: Deutsche Telekom Online Manager, NFL Mobile, OMD (News - Alert) Mobile, Uber and WhatsApp Messenger. The riskiest iOS apps found in enterprises included Dropbox, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Pandora, Spotify and WhatsApp Messenger.

The complete list of the top 100 apps used in the enterprise (50 iOS and 50 Android), along with their associated risk scores, can be found in the full Enterprise Mobile Security Pulse Report for Q4. The Pulse report uses data from millions of mobile security scans Appthority performs each quarter for its enterprise customers. The report includes app, device and network data, as well as Appthority's proprietary Mobile Threat Risk Score, which measures the highest risk from tens of millions of data points during the company's deep app analysis.

The Pulse report also lists the most common destination countries for mobile data and the reputation of the URLs used most by mobile apps among Appthority's enterprise customers. Leading destination countries for the top Android and iOS apps are the United States, Ireland and Germany. The United States, with over 85% of mobile app connections, saw the percent of trustworthy connections decline from 32% to 30.4% for Android connections and from 15% to 14.2% for iOS connections.
