FCC Public Comments on Net Neutrality Reveal Problems with Process

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho, Dec. 14, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Data analytics vendor Gravwell was the first to show millions of bot-generated responses have flooded the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) public comment section on net neutrality. Gravwell showed that more than 80 percent of the net neutrality comments the FCC were bot-generated. Of the 22 million comments the FCC had received as of early October, less than 4 million – roughly 17 percent – were unique. As the FCC Commissioners vote, today Gravwell CEO Corey Thuen made the following remarks about what the FCC's public comment period has revealed about the process.

"Whateer your position is on net neutrality, it's hard to argue that there is an effort to undermine the credibility of public comment periods," Thuen said. "Despite some very interesting findings, our analysis can only go so far as we don't have the full data picture available. In this day and age, the technology exists to sort and identify efforts to compromise the conversations between the public and regulators. We need to use it. I understand not wanting to release full data to private citizens, but when our government can't investigate itself... to whom do we turn?

"Based on our research and that from the office of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, which discovered that as many as two million Americans may have had their identities stolen so bad actors could lodge fake comments, we think authorities need to investigate those launching campaigns designed to manipulate our democratic process."
