Orthopaedic Institute for Children Awards $200,000 Grant to Further the Dreams of Students at Orthopaedic Medical Magnet High School

The Orthopaedic Institute for Children (OIC) has awarded a $200,000 grant to Orthopaedic Medical Magnet High School (OMMHS) to help further the dreams and educational opportunities of its students.

"Orthopaedic Medical Magnet High School provides students from the inner city and surrounding areas of Los Angeles with a greater chance of success in life and the opportunities to make meaningful contributions to society," said Anthony Scaduto, M.D., president and CEO of OIC. "Those who choose healthcare professions, whether as doctors, nurses, researchers or technicians, will continue OIC's proud tradition of making a difference in the world; and we are happy to be able to support their dreams in this way."

The partnership between OIC and OMMHS has a long history. Representatives from OIC are active in the Los Angeles Unified School District's advisory committee to the school, while OIC physicians and scientists participate in the design of the curriculum. After-school programs, summerinternships and volunteer opportunities at OIC give students exposure to many careers in healthcare and research. In addition, representatives from OIC hold regular seminars to discuss career options with students, while researchers and other staff members assist students with their science fair projects.

Opened in 2004, the Orthopaedic Medical Magnet High School has a graduation rate of 95 percent. It currently has enrollment of more than 800 students of which 99 percent are minorities (93 percent Hispanic) and 97 percent economically disadvantaged. It is located at 300 West 23rd Street, adjacent to OIC's downtown Los Angeles campus.
