Thirteen Schools Will Descend on North Broward Preparatory School for the FIRST Tech Robotics Challenge on Saturday, December 2, 2017

COCONUT CREEK, Fla., Nov. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- North Broward Preparatory School will host the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) a mid-level robotics competition for high school students on Saturday, December 2 from 9am to 2pm. FTC helps students learn how to design, program, build and operate robots with both driver and autonomous controlled behavior.

NORTH BROWARD PREPARTORY SCHOOL HOST FIRST TECH ROBOTICS COMPETITION ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2017 (13 high schools participating)

Florida's FTC season starts in September and runs through February. Student teams develop robots that can perform the tasks defined in the challenge then compete with, and against other teams in qualifying competitions and a state championship. The purpose of FTC is to give high school age students an opportunity to experience the fun and excitement of complex problem solving in a positive and supportive team environment.

This is North Broward's third year participating in this event. This is such a great opportunity for students and the competition is about so much more than just building robots," said Joan McGettigan, Director of Educational Technology, North Broward Preparatory School. "The whole program builds on North Broward's core values of rigorous academics, community service, building confidence and is a great compliment to our innovatve STEAM program (PreK-12). Not only do our students learn to build and program a robot, students also learn about fundraising, design and marketing their teams. Robotics and programming are two of the top ten in-demand skills in the world today," she continued.

North Broward Preparatory School's robotic team hopes to build upon their momentum following their second place finish in the national Solar Car Challenge last summer.

The following high schools will be participating on Saturday: West Palm Beach, Pembroke Pines, Boynton Beach, St. Thomas Aquinas, Western, Coral Springs Charter, North Broward Preparatory, Westminster Academy, Coral Springs, Cypress Bay, Pinecrest, FAU High, Ahfachkee School (Seminole Tribe of Florida).

Participants have access to millions of dollars in college scholarships. Each season concludes with Super-Regional Championships and an exciting FIRST Championship.

Florida teams have had a long history of success at the highest levels including four World Championships. The event will be held in the Global Wellness Center at North Broward Preparatory School located at 7600 Lyons Road, Coconut Creek, Florida from 9 am to 2 pm and is open to the public.
