Maryland Tech Council's Inaugural Innovation Speaker Series Event to Focus on Timely, New Innovations to Combat Opioid CrisisMaryland Tech Council announced today that Nora D. Volkow, M.D., Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institutes of Health (NIH) will kick off its new Innovation Speaker Series. Dr. Volkow will discuss the current state of the opioid crisis nationally and locally. Additionally, her presentation will cover what research has shown about this particular addiction, its prevention and treatment, and how science may help end the massive public health crisis. Key industry leaders are expected to attend this inaugural series event, which will take place Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at the Universities at Shady Grove from 7:30-9:30 a.m. Dr. Volkow's talk comes on the heels of the White House's recent announcement declaring the opioid crisis a public health emergency. The signed presidential memorandum ordered the Acting Secretary of Health and Human Services to declare a national public health emergency and instruct all federal agencies to use any emergency authorities available to reduce the number of overdose deaths due to opioid use. "According to the CDC, more than 64,000 deaths occurred from drug overdoses in 2017," said Maryland Tech Council Chief Executive Officer, Tami Howie. "With NIH in our backyard, countless innovations being developed by our members, and the collaboration efforts around these issues, we believe MTC can be the catalyst to springboard the discussion and help contribute to an end to this crisis." NIH is supplementing existing research efforts with a public-private collaborative research initiative to address new and innovative medications to treat opioid addiction and to develop strategies to prevent and reverse opioid overdose, while providing safe, effective and non-addictive ways to manage chronic pain.
