BoxUp gearing up for holiday e-commerce

TERRE HAUTE, Ind., Nov. 15, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- E-commerce and the subscription box industry – think Birchbox and Stitch Fix – are fueling growth for custom printed box company BoxUp.

BoxUp uses proprietary technology to custom print boxes in quantities as few as 12 for a low cost.

In its first year, BoxUp has quadrupled its production capacity and doubled its staff.

Started by packaging industry veterans Curt Stephens (BoxUp CEO) and Ward Hubbard (BoxUp CFO), BoxUp uses proprietary technology to custom print boxes in quantities as few as 12 or as many as 5,000, for a low cost. BoxUp launched in 2016 at the inaugural sellers' conference for Etsy, the per-to-peer e-commerce site that has 1.7 million sellers.

Subscription boxes – which deliver clothes, makeup, wine, meals and more to subscribers on a regular basis – are now a $5 billion industry, according to the newly formed Subscription Trade Association.

While big dogs Stitch Fix and Birchbox lead the market, home-based entrepreneurs have gotten into the game, too. BoxUp customers include such subscription-box services as DaprClub for men's style, ShredBoxMonthly for BMX gear, My Christmas Crate for year-round holiday spirit, and Everyday Sanctuary for meaningful faith experiences.

"It's all about the customer experience," Stephens said. "The small business entrepreneurs who buy our boxes want their customers to be delighted with the 'unboxing' experience. Presentation and brand perception create an emotional response, and that matters a lot."

BoxUp expects growth to continue in 2018 as shopping habits continue to shift from brick-and-mortar retailers to the stay-at-home economy.

"Sellers that are start-ups, makers or at-home entrepreneurs can gain instant credibility with custom packaging," Stephens said. "And positive experiences trigger repeat business."
