AxonIQ Delivers GDPR Module to Enable Mandatory Erasure of Data in Immutable Event-Driven Systems

AMSTERDAM, November 13, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --

AxonIQ, a software platform provider for event-driven microservices systems, today announced the availability of its GDPR Module for data erasure in event-sourced systems. The AxonIQ module enables organizations to maintain compliance of European Union Article 17, General Data Protection Regulation, a strict data protection compliance regime set to go into effect 25 May 2018. Among other regulations, the new law allows any individual the right to request erasure of their data in reasonable time from an organization that holds it. What's more, the organization is responsible to ensure that data is deleted from all relevant sources or face heavy fines and stiff penalties.

"The new data protection rules set forth by the EU will help individuals retain bettercontrol over their personal data, however it is stressful for companies who are tasked to implement solutions or risk severe repercussions," said Jeroen Speekenbrink, CEO and co-founder of AxonIQ. "The data erasure mandated by article 17 is a difficult problem in general, but it is especially challenging when using event-sourcing. Since this is the case for most AxonIQ customers, we designed the GDPR Module to support it."

In event-sourced systems, each individual event is, in principle, immutable and the event store as a whole is append-only.  Achieving GDPR article 17 compliance by modifying or deleting past events, violates these principles and may cause problems such as inconsistent states.

The AxonIQ GDPR module implements a well-established concept known as "cryptographic erasure" or "crypto-shredding," which means data gets erased by deleting the key required to decrypt it. The module allows for very easy implementation in a company's event-sourced applications, ensuring personal data within an event is stored in an encrypted form and deleted via the module's API. As it is included in an application as a library and configured as part of the event serialization mechanism, the module does not require an expensive implementation process, and encryptions are performed transparently.

The AxonIQ GDPR Module will be announced and explained in the webinar on November 14th, 2017 at 4 p.m. CET.
