IDERA Releases SQL Data Profiler Free Tool

IDERA (a division of Idera, Inc.), a provider of powerful database productivity tools, today announced the availability of SQL Data Profiler, the newest free tool in the IDERA portfolio and the first to focus on the needs of data architects. SQL Data Profiler reveals patterns that help database professionals understand database schema and the data contained within, which is essential to planning and execution.

Database professionals typically rely on time-consuming manual processes to parse and analyze database data. This can result in mistakes and delays that significantly impact database performance.

SQL Data Profiler provides a single-screen summary of the data in a database table in just seconds, without steep learning curves or deep dives. This saves database professionals hours of scrolling and searching when managing or iterating on database structure. Users simply: 1) connect to an SQL Server instance, 2) select a database, 3) select a table, 4) optionally adjust profiling settings, 5) press a button, and 6) view the results.

"Manual database exploration that takes hours or days isn't a viable solution for data professionals trying to avoid expensive, continuous optimization after deployment," said Ron Huizenga, senior product manager at IDERA. "In addition, creating custom SQL scripts to analyze the data is cumbersome. SQL Data Profiler provides essential schema and data type information as well as optimization recommendations that enable database developers to plan efficiently or make appropriate changes to database structure."

SQL Data Profiler analyzes database schema and data to illuminate if data fields accurately follow declared data types and constraints, the number and percentage of "NULL" values, data distribution and more.

Specific product features and benefits include:

  • Helps users understand the declared data type for each column in each database table versus the actual data type for the data held in a column.
  • Helps users understand the kind of data in certain data fields. The knowledge includes the number and percentage of "NULL" values and the number and percentage of zero-length data fields.
  • Helps users understand the distribution of data in a data field to help get an indication of the data contained in a data field without having to scroll vertically through potentially thousands of records.
  • Makes many data processes from data loads to SQL queries run faster, and saves on disk space and backup times.
  • Makes building packages for SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) easier when data types are appropriate and accurate.
