Technavio has published a new report on the cable accessories market in the US from 2017-2021. (Graphic: Business Wire)

The research study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the cable accessories market in the US for 2017-2021. The market is segmented based on voltage level, including low voltage, medium voltage, and high voltage.

Cable accessories form an important part of the entire power cable systems as without the accessories a power cable connection is impossible to establish. Cable accessories like cable joints, terminations, and connector systems (cable lugs and cable glands) are extensively used in forming the T&D network infrastructure across the country. Cable accessory application varies with the voltage level. The number of accessories required as well as the size of the accessory changes with various voltage applications. Much of the accessories regarding quantity is used in low-voltage applications where the network density is relatively more as compared with medium and high voltage applications.

Development and testing of explosion-resistant cable terminations

The use of self-supporting, fluid-filled terminations had been in existence since the development and use of HV power cables. Due to the exceptional long-term performance of these terminations, they have been the primary choice of all the network operators for several years. These fluid-filled terminations are now increasingly replacing porcelain terminations.

Gaurav Mohindru, a lead tools and components research analyst at Technavio, says, "The latest edition of fluid-filled terminations is designed around a hollow core composite housing. The design also incorporates a silicone rubber stress cone installed deep within the cable insulation. A variant of silicone oil compound fills the rest of the remaining volume. Such compounds represent an environment-friendly element among alternative insulation media. This design enables easy application across a variety of different cable sizes and types."

Increasing demand for high-temperature superconducting cables

A superconducting power cable system comprises many strands of superconducting wire wound around a copper core. A cryogenic coolant (liquid nitrogen) is used to optimize operating conditions by maintaining the ideal temperature at 77 degrees Kelvin. These cables transmit electric power at voltages ranging from 60 to 765 kV and distribute 5 to 46 kV. Sub-stations get overloaded and require additional transformer capacity to enhance their overall reliability and efficiency.

"The Joule effect creates energy losses in copper wires that transmit electricity over long distances, but superconducting cables can mitigate such losses, thus saving electrical energy produced by electric utility. Compared to conventional copper wires, superconducting cables offer lower transmission losses and are lightweight and compact. Moreover, with the high energy efficiency of utility grids, the installation of cable systems becomes faster and easier, and one superconducting cable can substitute five conventional power cables, thus, reducing land usage," adds Gaurav.

Rise in automation

The increasing demand for high-quality products has pushed companies to incorporate automation in their manufacturing process. Implementing automation increases profit margins as well as has a positive effect on resource regulation and loss control. Automation in a company's production or fabrication process using numerical controlled (NC) or computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines helps in increasing the overall competitive edge and reducing operational costs. However, the automation systems and equipment are capital-intensive, and that makes it necessary to conduct a comparative study of additional costs with the overall cost reductions in the long run.

Design plays a crucial role in any product development process. During this stage, precise design specifications help in achieving the desired form of a product. CNC machines are used to implement these specifications for convenience as well as easy development of complex products. Thus, the real use of machine tools aids industries to develop superior-quality products that possess enhanced dimensional accuracies.
