The global air cargo market is growing on the back drop of the growing global e-commerce market. Online retailers rely on the air cargo service providers because of the speedy delivery they offer. With the expected growth in the global e-commerce market, it is predicted that the global air cargo market will also witness growth. The rising demand from APAC economies, such as China, that constituted more than 35% share in 2016 in the region's economy will drive the growth of the air cargo market during the forecast period.

Expected rise in demand for temperature-sensitive products

Transporting and handling temperature-sensitive products gives rise to both challenges and opportunities for all cold chain industry participants. Businesses, such as pharmaceutical companies, depend on air transport for its speed in delivering high-value, time-sensitive, and temperature-controlled products.

"The International Air Transport Association took a step to support the air transport industry to comply with the pharmaceutical manufacturers' requirements. Working together with the air cargo industry stakeholders and regulators, IATA formed the Center of Excellence for Independent Validators in Pharmaceutical Logistics. CEIV Pharma addresses the industry's need for more compliance, security, safety, and efficiency, by forming a globally recognized pharmaceutical product handling certification," says Shakti Jhakar, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on logistics.

Rise in popularity of air cargo digitization

There is a rise in the digitization of systems in all the industries across the world. Similarly, a digital process will increase the air cargo value proposition by starting innovative services and solutions. The Air Waybill is one of the important air cargo documents, and its conversion to an e-AWB is the first step toward digitization. To fast-track the global acceptance of the e-AWB, IATA developed e-AWB360. The e-AWB360 program is planned around an airport community approach to e-AWB implementation.

"The e-AWB desktop tool was launched to help small and medium air freight forwarders to create, send, and manage e-AWBs easily and efficiently. Challenges such as perceived complexity and a lack of harmonization in e-AWB procedures between stakeholders, must also be mitigated," adds Shakti.

Increased focus on autonomous vehicles in logistics sector

Autonomous vehicles are becoming increasingly popular with products, such as Google's (News - Alert) driverless car, which rode around 1.6 to 2.2 million miles in October 2016. It is estimated that companies are expecting the commercialization of autonomous cars by around 2019 to 2022.

The popularity of autonomous vehicles has also ripped into the logistics sector. For example, self-driving vehicles have made inroads in logistics, reaching a level of maturity for commercial use in warehouse operations. In August 2016, it was observed that the introduction of vision-guided autonomous forklifts increased Giant Eagle's warehouse productivity by more than 10%.
