Dr. Nicholas Bernthal of UCLA/Orthopaedic Institute for Children Named 2017 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award Recipient

Nicholas Bernthal, M.D., assistant professor-in-residence at the UCLA/Orthopaedic Institute for Children's Department of Orthopaedics, has been awarded the 2017 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award by the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. This award recognizes faculty members and graduating students who demonstrate both clinical excellence and outstanding compassion in the delivery of care and who show respect for patients, their families and healthcare colleagues.

"We are so very proud of Dr. Bernthal and couldn't think of a more deserving person to receive this prestigious honor," said Anthony Scaduto, M.D., chief executive officer of the Orthopaedic Institute for Children. "We are very fortunate to have this outstanding orthopaedic surgeon part of our clinical team and are thrilled to see this latest in a long list of accolades acknowledging his contributions, achievements and dedication to the field."

Considered among the best and the brightest physicians of his generation, last year Dr. Bernthal was honored with the renowned American-British-Canadian Traveling Fellowship from the American Orthopaedic Association. The fellowship recognizes young leaders (under the age of 45) for their early contributions to orthopaedics and prmotes their leadership skills to the broader orthopaedic community. As a result of this honor, Dr. Bernthal and his four fellow recipients spent time this past spring in the United Kingdom and South Africa to further foster their knowledge and leadership skills in the field of orthopaedics.

Dr. Bernthal's varied career has taken him from playing basketball for Princeton University to working in South Africa on HIV/AIDS policy to Cornell University for medical school and eventually to an orthopaedic residency at UCLA. After fellowships in orthopaedic research at UCLA and orthopaedic oncology at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, Dr. Bernthal joined the UCLA and OIC faculty where he has become an NIH-funded investigator developing a research program in implant infections. He also founded UCLA's Global Orthopaedic Initiative.

The Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Awards was launched by The Arnold P. Gold Foundation in 1991 at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. All accredited schools of medicine in the United States and Canada are eligible to present the Tow Award, and currently more than 100 medical schools participate in this program.
