Nominees Named for the 2017 Spiffy Awards

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- For the past 10 years, the Telecom Council has worked to identify and recognize companies who have the technology, vision and roadmaps required to disrupt in the telecommunications industry.

Each year, the Telecom Council's Service Provider Innovation Forum (SPIF) is presented with up to 150 communications start-ups representing a broad range of telecom products and services. Although any start-up who presented between July 2016 and August 2017 was eligible for the 10th Annual SPIFFY awards, nominees are decided by SPIF members who ranked presenting start-ups on how they excelled in the categories below.

The 2017 SPIFFY Awards will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 1 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. This event is open to the public and attended by telecommunications executives from around the world. To learn more about this public event, click here (https://www.telecomcouncil.com/spiffys)

And the nominees are ...

The Graham Bell Award for Best Communication Solutions

Telecommunications began with the invention of the telegraph in 1837, the telephone in 1876 and has evolved from voice communications to include text, video and satellites. This award recognizes the company that advanced the noble cause of improving telecommunications, and the nominees have demonstrated their commitment to this expanding field to our Service Provider Forum by creating solutions that advance people's ability to communicate whenever and wherever they want.

Edison Award for Most Innovative Startup

Some ideas are so unusual they surprise you, but it's a small minority of these that are also likely to succeed. This award recognizes the start-ups with the most innovative ideas, but also the ability to successfully bring that idea to market. The nominees have demonstrated their commitment to innovation with endless hours and passion that have made the impossible, possible.

San Andreas Award for Most Disruptive Technology

Because complacency is not an option, the Telecom Council believes in the importance of companies who think outide the box and make the market sit-up and take notice. This award recognizes most game-changing start-up to present to the Telecom Council. Our Service Provider Forum members believe these nominees have demonstrated the ability disrupt markets and change the way people do things.

Core Award for Best Fixed Telecom Opportunity

Building a networking company is neither sexy nor easy, but Telecom Council members rely on entrepreneurs to create the technologies that will eventually be the building blocks of telecom networks. This award category focuses on fixed telecom and the core of the network. Service Provider Forum members have a strong interest in taking these nominees into their networks.

Zephyr Award for Best Mobile Opportunity

Building a successful mobile company is harder than it was 10 years ago, but Telecom Council members are constantly scouting for start-ups who have built mobile solutions that fit into their operations and subscriber base. This award category focuses on wireless telecom and the edge of the network, and our Service Provider Forum members have a strong in taking these nominees into their networks.

Ground Breaker Award for Engineering Excellence

Turning the gears of progress through sweat and tenacity to produce the most impressive technological advancements is often paraphrased as R&D. These nominees have impressed our SPIF members with their radicalism and determination and of course impressive technological advances.

Prodigy Award for the Most Successful SPIF Alumni

Innovation doesn't begin and end with start-ups. At the Telecom Council, we continue to follow the successes of our previous presenters to recognize those continuing to have significant impact on the communications industry or achieving the most notable success. This category recognizes the pre-2016 startup company that our Service Provider Members have chosen to invest in which has experienced notable growth or market success.
