Schwarzman Scholars Celebrates Second Convocation Ceremony


Schwarzman Scholars today celebrated the beginning of the school year for the second class of Scholars. The students have completed a two-week orientation before embarking on the 11-month professional Master's Degree in Global Affairs at Beijing's Tsinghua University. The second cohort of Scholars is made up of 126 of the world's most promising future leaders, who have come together from 30 countries and 75 universities around the world and highly diverse backgrounds: from the United States military to the Chinese music industry.

Over the course of the year, they will engage in cross-cultural exchanges, immersive visits, and exposure to some of the most respected global leaders. Last year's class hosted lectures by Former Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Tony Blair, General David Petraeus, and Former U.S. Secretaries of the Treasury Henry Paulson and Jack Lew.

At the ceremony, remarks were given by United States Ambassador Terry Branstad, as well as Vice President and Provost of Tsinghua University, Yang Bin. The Scholars received congratulatory messages by video from Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors (News - Alert), Michael Bloomberg, the former Mayor of New York City, and Ray Dalio, Chairman of Bridgewater Associates.

Stephen A. Schwarzman, in welcoming the second class of Schwarzman Scholars at the convocation ceremony and reflecting on the inaugural year of the program, said, "We are delighed to welcome our second class of Scholars to Beijing. They join a community of Scholars who will make up an influential alumni network dedicated to improving multi-national cooperation and understanding."

About Schwarzman Scholars: Schwarzman Scholars was inspired by the Rhodes Scholarship, which was founded in 1902 to promote international understanding and peace, and is designed to meet the challenges of the 21st century and beyond. Blackstone Co-Founder Stephen A.
