Actiontec's Chipset Agnostic SmartSteering™ Technology Deployed in over 50,000 Homes

Actiontec Electronics (News - Alert) announced that its new Optim™ SmartSteering technology is being deployed in over 50,000 customer homes across North America. Carriers have reported a 20 percent drop in support calls in homes where SmartSteering is deployed, providing a significant data point for how SmartSteering improves home WiFi (News - Alert) quality and the customer experience.

The explosion of WiFi connected devices, along with the immense popularity of video streaming, places more pressure on home WiFi networks. According to Gartner (News - Alert), Inc., there will be 20.8 billion connected devices by 2020. For broadband service providers, a majority of support calls received each year are related to Wi-Fi performance and the average truck roll to troubleshoot and fix a problem can cost hundreds of dollars or more.

SmartSteering technology helps service providers meet this mounting challenge by optimizing WiFi performance for the many devices in the home. SmartSteering can be installed on WiFi routers and network extenders and combines Band Steering and Device Steering. With SmartSteering intelligence, customers are sure to get the strongest signal and fastest connection possible no matter where they are in the home.

Actiontec's SmartSteering technology is chipet agnostic and works with many of the leading WiFi radio chipsets. This gives carriers the unique ability to use SmartSteering to optimize WiFi performance across their territory even with a mix of WiFi access points in subscriber homes.

"Our mission is to make WiFi networks faster, smarter, and more reliable in homes everywhere. We are very excited about the early data coming back from carrier deployments. A twenty percent reduction in support calls has a big impact on both the carrier's bottom line and the end user experience," said Brian Henrichs, Chief Business Development Officer at Actiontec Electronics.

About SmartSteering™

  • Band Steering: Actiontec's band steering algorithm looks at each device on the WiFi network and intelligently guides older, slower devices to the 2.4 GHz band, while steering newer faster devices to the 5 GHz band.
  • Device Steering: Actiontec's technology fixes the sticky client problem to ensure optimal performance for subscribers as they move from one end of the house to the other.
  • A SmartSteering router/network extender monitors the signal strength of all WiFi clients in the home and guides clients to the closest access point, gateway or network extender.
  • SmartSteering is technology agnostic, supports most popular WiFi chipsets and can be enabled on third-party hardware via an API.

SmartSteering is available now and is a part of Actiontec's Optim Whole Home WiFi Solution, a cloud-based platform that gives broadband operators the tools they need to manage subscribers' home wireless networks and all the wireless client devices on it.
