CNL Celebrates Canadian Science & Technology at 2017 Open House

Canada's national nuclear laboratory opens its doors to showcase world-class campus and inspire a new generation of science and technology leaders

CHALK RIVER, ON, Aug. 12, 2017 /CNW/ - Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), Canada's premier nuclear science and technology organization, celebrated Canada 150 this weekend by opening their doors to the public for the 2017 Open House. Over 2,000 visitors turned out to celebrate the scientific accomplishments being made by CNL employees – past and present – and to learn about the cutting-edge work being carried out on behalf of Canadians in clean energy, health, safety, security and environmental stewardship.

The open house featured scientific demonstrations and exhibits, tours of the company's world-class laboratories, engaging presentations, hands-on activities, heavy equipment displays, local food endors, kids' entertainment and much more. In welcoming members of the public to its Chalk River campus, CNL hopes to inspire the next generation to pursue careers in scientific and technical fields.

"CNL is undergoing an exciting transformation, made possible by a $1.2 billion investment in new facilities and infrastructure. With Canada 150 this year, it only made sense to celebrate by opening our doors to showcase the world-class science taking place right here in the Ottawa Valley," explained Mark Lesinski, President and CEO of CNL. "Our 2,800 employees have tremendous pride in the work done here, and that is on full display today, with hundreds of AECL and CNL volunteers on hand to make the day fun and informative for our guests."

CNL recently announced its "Long-Term Strategy" for the future, which outlines a vision for CNL over the next ten years, and aims to position the organization as a global leader in nuclear science and technology – one that is commercially successful, respected for its scientific capabilities, and home to world-leading expertise based out of a modern, efficient and collaborative campus environment. The 2017 Open House comes during an important period of transformation, which was a central theme of the event's program.

"Together, AECL and CNL have more than six decades of innovation, developing technologies that have become part of our daily lives, from nuclear medicine to fight cancer, to nuclear energy that powers our home," said Richard Sexton, President and CEO of AECL. "That work continues today with a renewed sense of purpose, and this event is a wonderful opportunity to share that vision with our friends and family, and members of the community."
