Moravia "Spec Check" Ensures Chinese E-Commerce Compliance

NEWBURY PARK, Calif., Aug. 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Moravia has launched a specialty localization service to help ensure one of the world's most prominent apparel companies doesn't run into compliance trouble in China.

According to Morgan Gallup Zhu, Director of Asian Operations at Moravia, "Spec Check" is unique to the Chinese market. "It grew out of a pressing need we discovered nearly two years ago for translators and localization professionals to help companies adhere to strict Chinese advertising laws that require 100% translation accuracy in advertising and e-commerce," Gallup said.

"A single mistake or overstated promise can lead to serious consequences for the company and its brand, including potential fines, paying punitive damages to consumers who were misled, and, most serious of all, the possibility of shutting down the seller's Chinese website or part of their operations."

More specifcally, in China:

  • Superlatives in advertising are not allowed, such as "we have the best athletic shoes on the market."
  • Product descriptions must also be accurate and consistent across channels and physical products. A product labelled as blue-grey, for example, cannot be referred to as blue in the website product description or other advertising channels.
  • Similarly, all product specifications must be accurate. For instance, it's against Chinese law to refer to polyurethane, a common component in athletic shoes, as anything other than it is—such as 100% leather.

According to Gallup, Spec Check grew out of a client request to ensure translation accuracy met all Chinese legal requirements, in addition to Moravia's normal localization services. As a result, products are shipped and stored at Moravia's offices in China before being shipped back to the client's warehouse. They are also checked and double-checked by a dedicated compliance account team to ensure due diligence and accuracy.

Moravia currently has in-house space to store its client's products, and is in the process of expanding its storage space to accommodate demand as the program grows. Each Spec Check client also has a personal account rep to ensure a seamless flow of communication and quick response when new products or updated information are necessary.
