VATC's Revolutionary EPIC Ready™ Digital Media Replicator Used in Flintlock 2017 Exercise

Visual Awareness Technologies and Consulting Inc. (VATC), a leader in delivering realistic training environments to government and commercial customers around the world, announced today that part of its EPIC Ready™ platform - the Digital Media Replicator - was used during the Flintlock 2017 exercise, held earlier this year across Africa by U.S. and African Special Operations Forces. EPIC DMR is a tool that enhances mission readiness by bringing social and news media into live and virtual exercise environments, creating a more realistic training experience, which leads to improved mission success.

"As social media and other open-source information increases in importance in modern warfare, it's imperative that training and exercise environments reflect this new reality," said Sara Moola, VATC's co-founder and CEO. "VATC's roots in the Special Operations community enabled us to see and act on this gap, resulting in the creation of EPIC DMR, which realistically simulates a holistic information environment and challenges units against key training tasks. With EPIC DMR, forces can train more like they actually fight, ultimately keeping them safer and more secure."

Flintlock is a month-long training experience that brings together more than 2,000 military personnel from 24 African and western nations to develop strong interoperability among counterterrorism partners. As part of their participation, VATC provided EPIC DMR to U.S. and African Special Operations Forces, representing the first time that social media was integrated into the Flintlock training experience.

EPIC DMR aggregates news and social media information and injects it into training exercise and rehearsal scenarios, enhancing realism for operators and allowing participants to sense, understand and respond to changes in the information environment in real-time. During the Flintlock exercise, EPIC DMR was used by operators to monitor and analyze social media usage patterns, gather intelligene and experience a rapidly changing information environment similar to what they would encounter in a crisis or deployment.

EPIC DMR is one component of VATC's larger EPIC Ready™ platform, a cloud-based or appliance-delivered platform that was created to improve realism in training, and to distribute exercise performance visual indicator analytics in both dashboards and map-based presentations of mission readiness. EPIC Ready™ is made up of three modules that combine to generate the most realistic open and distributed enterprise platform ever created. System elements include:

  • Common Database Builder - Provides enhanced command and control (C2) and geospatial visualization, allowing users to build, edit and share 3-D models for a uniform training experience.
  • Digital Media Replicator - Enables participants to engage in the most realistic environments possible by aggregating open source, publicly available digital media information to inform intelligence and operations and enhance training and exercise effects.
  • Planning and Analysis System - Improves rapid field review and deepens the combat preparedness assessment by measuring training performance against mission objectives, becoming the first real-time system to quantify mission readiness.

EPIC DMR, as well as the larger EPIC Ready platform, will be demoed at iFest 2017, July 31-August 2 at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center in Alexandria, Va. To set up a demo, please contact Angela Gotch from VATC at [email protected]. For more information, please visit www.vatcinc.com.
