Surgical Navigation and Robotics Systems Market - United States Procedure Numbers, Market Size, Value, Trends, Analysis and Forecast 2017-2023

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 22, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- According to iData Research, the full report suite on the U.S. surgical navigation and robotic systems markets includes four segments in surgical navigation and six segments in robotics. The segmentation for surgical navigation systems includes systems with neurosurgery applications, spinal surgery applications, ENT (ear/nose/throat) applications, and orthopedic hip and knee applications. The segmentation for surgical robotics systems includes spinal, neurosurgery, minimally invasive surgery (MIS), radiosurgery, catheters and orthopedic robotically assisted systems.

For many procedures, the use of an IGS or robotic system increases the duration of the operation. Facilities and surgeons will therefore lose money as they are forced to schedule fewer procedures. This delay has decreased with newer models; however, any increase in time may reduce the number of operations that can be scheduled in a facility. This negatively impacts both surgeons and facilities, and can make potential clients less willing to pay the high costs associated with robotics systems.

Surgical navigation systems are often marketed by medical device companies and bundled with other products, particularly orthopedic implants. Meanwhile, robotics companies have traditionally been smaller and focused on a narrower range of technologies. However, partnerships have led to a series of acquisitions of smaller robotics companies by larger, more established medical device companies. Since the navigation and robotic technologies can in many cases be considered competitors, this trend is expected to continue, especially as robotic technology becomes more widely adopted and accepted.

Medtronic led the surgical navigation systems market in 2016. The company has established itself through brand recognition and by making systems compatible with their implant products. It is expected to remain a strong competitor.

Intuitive Surgical led the surgical robotics market in 2016. It remains the dominant competitor in the United States and promotes robotic applications in surgery. Its system focuses on laparoscopic approaches for a variety of procedures. However, other companies are expanding robotic options in orthopedic and other procedural areas.

Other leading competitors in surgical navigation include Brainlab and Stryker, which also hold significant market shares in the United States, in addition to a number of companies with smaller installed bases. The surgical robotic systems market saw growth on the part of Medtech, Mazor Robotics, and Stryker's Mako system, amongst others.
