The MTM's most recent survey results find half of Canadians have heard of Amazon Prime Video, but for now they rather shop than watch


OTTAWA, June 22, 2017 /CNW/ - The Media Technology Monitor (MTM), a research product of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC/Radio Canada), today announced the immediate release of its new Sneak Peek Report

Half of Canadians are aware of the new Amazon Prime Video offering, but has this translated into viewing? (CNW Group/The Media Technology Monitor (MTM))

The MTM Sneak Peek Report is being offered as well as the English- and French-language Media and Technology Adoption Reports and the most recent spring 2017 data set, which is all available to subscribers on the MTM Portal.

The Sneak Peek explores five key findings and povides an inkling of what can be expected from the upcoming season.



Key findings from the Sneak Peek include the following:

  • Since Amazon Prime Video entered the Canadian market in late 2016, awareness is quite high among Canadians. However, it's still early days as awareness hasn't translated into use with only 2% of Canadians using the service;
  • Among those Canadians who watch TV content online, 7% are using "pirated" TV services. The percentage decreases even further when looking at Francophone online TV viewers - only 3% report streaming pirated TV content in the past month;
  • The issue of "fake news" has become an increasingly hot topic among consumers and policy makers alike. When asked this past spring, half of Canadians reported that they were very concerned about the consequences of "fake news."
