MedRisk Adds Telerehabilitation to its Managed Physical Medicine Offering for Workers' Compensation

MedRisk is integrating telerehabilitation into its Platinum Grade Program for managed physical medicine services for injured workers. The first in the workers' compensation industry to offer a national telerehabilitation solution, MedRisk's innovative approach uses telecommunications technologies to enable licensed physical therapists to work with injured workers from their homes or workplaces.

"Telerehabilitation increases access to quality care, enhances efficiencies and supports greater patient satisfaction and compliance," said Mary O'Donoghue, MedRisk's Chief Clinical and Product Officer.

The program uses screening tools and data analytics to identify injured workers who are likely to embrace the technology and benefit from a blend of in-clinic physical therapy and telerehabilitation. HIPPA-compliant video conferencing technology connects a physical therapist on MedRisk's staf with the injured worker for guided treatment sessions.

The on-staff physical therapist assesses the injured worker and develops a treatment strategy that customizes the most appropriate telerehabilitation solutions for that patient. Solutions include a dynamic library of instructional videos and other store-and-forward materials to support patient education. Emerging technology such as three-dimensional motion tracking demonstrates the correct way to do an exercise and monitors the patient's performance, providing instant feedback to prompt corrections. This remote patient monitoring technology also captures clinical data on performance, progress and compliance so clinicians can maximize care management.

"We see telerehabilitation as a natural progression in the evolution of physical rehabilitation for injured workers," O'Donoghue said.
