National Academy of Arbitrators Honors Professor Rafael Gely with Service Award

The National Academy of Arbitrators,, the leading North American organization of labor and employment arbitrators, bestowed the David Petersen Service Award on University of Missouri Law School Professor Rafael Gely, it was announced today.

Gely is the James E. Campbell Missouri Endowed Professor of Law, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and the Director of the Center for the Study of Dispute Resolution.

The NAA honored Gely for his role as co-Editor of, a joint venture of the NAA and the University of Missouri Law School. The website was created in response to often inaccurate reporting in the media about labor and employment arbitration and the dispute resolution process that has served to provide workplace justice and peace for many decades. The site provides an educational resource for journalists as well as involved parties and advocates, scholars and interested members of the public.

Professor Gely's efforts have been instrumental throughout each stage of the joint venture, including the website's design, implementation and ongoing maintenance. In addition to supervising student assistants, he has contacted journalists to encourage accuracy before publication of articles, as well as after the fact to express gratitude when they "get the story right." In the NAA's view, Professor Gely's diligence and hard work contribute significantly to the understanding of labor and employment arbitration in both the U.S. and Canada.

The David Petersen Service Award was established to recognize the outstanding dedication and quiet contributions of members and friends of the National Academy of Arbitrators.
