GEICO Reminds You Why a Home Inventory List is Important

If an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure then GEICO encourages you to create a home inventory list. Most people do not plan to have their home ruined with or without any notice and for too many people any mishap can feel like a catastrophe. A home inventory list will make it easier to recover lost or damaged items and review your insurance policy coverage by documenting your possessions.

A home inventory list will assist in the following ways:

  • Assess assets for home owners insurance
    • An itemized list makes it easier to assess proper coverage
  • Speed up the claims process by verifying items lost
    • A complete list will eliminate confusion about what is missing

How to complete a home inventory list?

Give as much detail as you can about all of the items in your home. Categorize your items by room so you don't forget anything, and check each room off the list.

You will want to include:

  • Description of items
  • Photographs
  • Serial numbers
  • Purchase Price/estimated value
  • Purchased date
  • Receipts for bigger ticket items

There are free applications available from spread sheets and printable list to phone apps like "Know Your Stuff" from I.I.I.(Insurance Information Institute) to assist you with taking a home inventory. However you do it, just make sure it's available when you need it. Keep hard copies in a safe deposit box or fire proof safe with other important documents. You can also digitally store important information in the cloud.
